The VW Passat B5 (Type 3B) is a mid-range vehicle from Volkswagen . It replaced the Passat B4 in autumn 1996 .
The original model of the Passat B5 was produced from August 1996 (Variant: from April 1997) to September 2000, while the revised vehicle 'B5 GP' was produced from October 2000 to February 2005. “GP” stood for “Great Product Upgrade”, a proper name from VW for model maintenance , which in this case was mainly based on external changes. The vehicle was produced in Germany in two VW plants ( Volkswagenwerk Emden and Volkswagenwerk Mosel ).
In spring 2005, the Passat B6 went on sale in Germany as the successor.

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
The Passat B5 was officially launched on October 11, 1996. It offers particularly good space in the rear. Unlike the previous models B4 and VW Passat B3 35i from 1988, the engine of the B5 is installed lengthways again. The drive train corresponds to that of the Audi A4 introduced at the end of 1994 . Both used the PL45 platform.
With the B5, Volkswagen wanted to set new quality standards for future VW vehicles: The body is fully galvanized and VW gave an eleven-year guarantee against rust perforation. The B5 received praise for its driving comfort; The torsion-resistant body, the four-link front axle of the Audi A4 and a redesigned rear twist-beam axle contributed to this.
The B5 was the first VW model with a CAN bus for the convenience systems. The CAN bus often caused problems (for example with the central locking ). The mechanical quality of some moving parts was initially poor: loose tie rods and supporting joints as well as the occasional rust formation on the tailgate were a problem. The numerous quality problems were also related to the course taken by the then "VW Sparsanierer" Lopez .
Many problems have been fixed by VW over time, to which the facelift in autumn 2000 contributed.
Technical specifications
All-wheel drive could also be ordered for the 1.8 (92 kW), 2.3 VR5 (110 kW), 1.9 TDI (81/85 kW) and 2.5 TDI (110 kW) engines. The 2.8 V6 (142 kW) was equipped as standard with the Syncro or 4Motion all-wheel drive system (from April 1999). The all-wheel drive system was renamed 4Motion in 1998. This all-wheel drive system ( Syncro or 4Motion) is largely identical to the Audi quattro drive .

Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
The production of the type 3BG or B5 GP ("large product upgrade") started in October 2000 and was available at dealers in the following month.
It differed from the original Passat B5 by optical retouching that included modified headlights and taillights. The scattered glass headlights were replaced by clear glass headlights with chrome-plated inserts and more sharply contoured indicators. At the rear, the newly introduced round light optics was particularly striking, which also featured other VW vehicles until the Walter da Silva design was implemented . The mechanical quality improved significantly. The 1.9-liter diesels were completely converted to pump-nozzle injection.
From autumn 2001 there was a model very similar to the Passat from the sister company Škoda, the Škoda Superb . Compared to the Passat, it offers a longer wheelbase, different seats and equipment details. The so-called “China Passat” is largely identical to this.
From September 2001, the 4Motion all-wheel drive was offered as an eight-cylinder engine ( W8 engine ) as a sedan or variant as a Passat W8 (type 3BS). The equipment was upgraded compared to the Highline and included, among other things, four exhaust pipes, xenon headlights, chrome trim strips on the dashboard and interior door panels or seats in Connolly leather.
The version remained unsuccessful with only 2359 copies sold and was discontinued in September 2004 without replacement. The W8 was also built under the name “Passat Protect” as a special protection vehicle of resistance class B4.
From autumn 2003, the two-liter TDI with soot particle filter and 100 kW (136 hp) was offered, which was able to significantly boost the then dropping sales figures. As a special feature, this engine was the first to have this filter device as standard. He also offered an additive dosing system that added a cerine-based additive to the combustion process. Volkswagen later abandoned this technology for the German car market.
Another minor facelift was also carried out in autumn 2003 without changing the product name. The side mirrors received integrated indicators, the basic color of the dashboard and the door panels became anthracite gray (instead of black). The standard equipment lines have been revised.
Technical specifications
The 2.0 (85 kW), 2.3 V5 (125 kW), 1.9 TDI (96 kW) and 2.5 TDI (110 kW) engines could be ordered with all-wheel drive. The 2.8 V6 (142 kW), 2.5 TDI (132 kW) and the 4.0 W8 (202 kW) were equipped with 4Motion as standard. This all-wheel drive (4Motion) is largely identical to the Audi quattro drive.

- The availability of the engines depended on the model, equipment and market.
Remarks:
- The TDI logo for pump-nozzle engines with 74 kW (100 PS) was on the red "I", for 96 kW (130 PS) on the red "DI" and on the 100 kW (136 PS) until 09/2004 on the red Recognize “TDI”. Afterwards the lettering “2.0 TDI” in silver was used.
- The TDI logo for distributor injection pump engines with 110 kW (150 PS) could be recognized by the red "I", for 120 kW (163 PS) by the red "DI" and with 132 kW (180 PS) by the red "TDI".
overview
1996
August: Start of production of the Passat B5 sedan.
October: Market launch of the Passat B5 sedan with the engines:
- 1.6-SR, 74 kW (100 PS)
- 1.8 20V, 92 kW (125 PS)
- 1.8 20V turbo, 110 kW (150 PS)
- 2.3 VR5, 110 kW (150 PS)
- 2.8 V6-30V Syncro, 142 kW (193 hp)
- 1.9 TDI, 66 kW (90 PS) or 81 kW (110 PS).
The Passat B4 Variant will initially continue to be built.
The following engines were initially available with Syncro (permanent all-wheel drive) for a surcharge: 1.8, VR5, 1.9 TDI. Syncro was standard on the 2.8 V6.
1997
April: Market launch of the Passat Variant station wagon . The engines corresponded to the sedan.
1998
August: New in the range: 2.5-liter V6 TDI engine with 110 kW (150 PS)
1999
January: New in the range: 1.9-liter TDI engine with pump-nozzle system (PD) and 85 kW (115 PS)
April: All-wheel drive versions now with the suffix 4Motion instead of Syncro
2000
Start: Further units will follow:
- 2.0, 88 kW (120 PS), also available with all-wheel drive
- 1.9 TDI-PD, 74 kW (100 PS)
- 1.9 TDI-PD, 85 kW (115 PS) now with 6-speed manual transmission
October: Major model upgrade (B5 GP) with a new engine range (before later expansion):
- 1.6, 75 kW (102 PS)
- 1.8 T, 110 kW (150 PS)
- 2.0, 85 kW (115 PS)
- 2.8 V6 4Motion, 142 kW (193 hp)
- 1.9 TDI, 74 kW (100 PS) or 96 kW (130 PS) (PD)
- 2.5 V6 TDI, 110 kW (150 PS)
All gasoline engines will be converted to the Euro 4 emissions standard, all diesels to the Euro 3 emissions standard. The diesel range has been largely revised.
The 1.9 liter 66 kW (90 PS) distributor injection pump engines were replaced by engines with pump-nozzle injection and 74 kW (100 PS), the same applies to the 81 kW (110 PS) distributor injection pump and later 115 PS available in parallel Pump-nozzle motors, which are replaced by the 96 kW (130 HP) pump-nozzle unit. The four-cylinder TDI engines were now only available with pump-nozzle injection.
The Passat's permanent all-wheel drive with Torsen differential corresponds to the Audi A4 B6 Quattro that was built at the same time. It is now available for an extra charge with the 2.0, 2.3 V5, the 1.9 TDI with 96 kW (130 PS) (PD) and the 2.5 V6 TDI engine with 110 kW (150 PS); it is still standard on the 2.8 V6.
2001
January: 2.3 V5 now with four-valve cylinder head and 125 kW (170 hp).
September: 4.0 W8 4Motion with 202 kW (275 PS).
December: New 2.0 with five-valve cylinder head and 96 kW (130 PS), but this version of the two-liter was only available with front-wheel drive. The two-valve version of the two-liter remains in the program with optional all-wheel drive.
2002
May: The emergency key is omitted.
December: The 2.3 V5 is withdrawn from the range without replacement.
2003
June: The 2.5 V6 TDI is now available in two output levels (120 kW (163 PS) and 132 kW (180 PS)) instead of 110 kW (150 PS). In addition, these now also meet the Euro 4 emissions standard (at 132 kW (180 PS) depending on the engine code). The 4Motion all-wheel drive was now standard on the 132 kW (180 PS) version, but no longer available for the 120 kW (163 PS) version.
Autumn: Other small facelifts:
- New 2.0-liter TDI-PD engine with diesel particulate filter and 100 kW (136 PS)
- Introduction of the key switch for the passenger's front and side airbags
- New exterior mirrors with integrated side indicators
- Park-Distance-Control (PDC) parking aid available now
2004
September: The 4.0 W8 is withdrawn from the range without replacement.
2005
February: Production of the Passat B5 ends. In March the model will be replaced by the Passat B6 with transverse engine.
Equipment lines of the Passat 3B and 3BG
The Passat B5 (type 3B and 3BG) was available in four equipment lines: Basic, Trendline, Comfortline and Highline. The standard equipment scope described relates to the first model year of model 3B5 (model year 1997) and is taken from the VW price list at the time.
- Basic surfaces with soft paint, electric front windows, four-spoke steering wheel, drinking cup holder, upholstery covers in simple fabric, partially painted bumpers, steel rims with hubcaps; in the variant: roof rails, luggage compartment blind
- Comfortline had a little more equipment. In addition to the basic version, there were comfort seats in velor and power windows at the rear.
- Trendline was aimed more at sporty customers and so there were, in addition to the basic version, sports seats, a three-spoke steering wheel, sports seats with lumbar support, electric rear windows and decorative strips in carbon look.
- Highline was the highest equipment line. It was significantly more expensive, but also offered more features such as leather seats (or Alcantara ), radio gamma and wooden trims. Externally there were bumper strips in the bumpers and doors painted in the vehicle color, light alloy wheels as standard (or other VW rims of your choice at no extra cost) and automatic air conditioning in the interior.
With the facelift model 3BG, the highline equipment can be recognized by the chrome trim strips above the bumper strips painted in the vehicle color. In the Highline equipment of the 3BG, light alloy rims were only available as standard in more powerful models. In the interior there were seats with Alcantara center panels and leather side bolsters. Various decorative elements were executed in wood or grid optics.
There were also various special models, some of them country-specific. In 2000, for example, there was an "Edition" series with Adelaide alloy wheels and neatly patterned upholstery from the discontinued model of the first 3B5 generation. In Austria, the designations GL and GT (upgraded Comfort and Highline) were introduced from model year 2004. There was also a special “Business” model that was delivered with an integrated hands-free system.
