The technical development of the first generation took place on the basis of the Audi A3 Sportback in summer 2012. The first test vehicles were already rolling on Chinese roads in November. The Škoda Sportback had the front of the A3 with a Škoda-typical grill and bumpers. The taillights, however, came from the Škoda Octavia Scout .
In April 2013, the fully developed Gran Lavida was presented to the public for the first time at the Shanghai Auto Show . The VW model now had the front and rear bumpers of the new VW Lavida. This time the taillights come from the A3 Cabriolet. Until the start of series production, the exterior had largely been adapted to that of the current Lavida. Only the rear lights will differ from the notchback Lavida.
A 1.4 and a 1.6 liter engine were offered as engine versions. The nationwide market launch took place towards the end of July 2013.
