The VW Touareg (Type 7P) is the second generation of the Touareg SUV from Volkswagen and was presented to the public for the first time on February 10, 2010. Market launch was in April 2010. It shares the platform with the second generation of the Porsche Cayenne , which came onto the German market in May 2010.

body

Compared to its predecessor, the Touareg has grown by around four centimeters both in length and in wheelbase. In addition, the body has been optimized aerodynamically, which is why the height has been reduced by around two centimeters. The vehicle is around 200 kg lighter than its predecessor. Lightweight construction, the use of high-strength steels with smaller cross-sections, the use of lightweight materials and the elimination of the heavy transfer case with reduction and lock in the basic version made this possible. The body rigidity increased by five percent. Depending on the engine, the vehicle has a gradeability of 31 to 45 °.

Facelift

In October 2014, the revised version of the Touareg came onto the market. Its front was adapted to the current family design and thus refers to the VW Passat B8, which appeared shortly afterwards . In addition, xenon headlights have been standard equipment since the facelift. Only subtle changes took place in the interior. In the course of the facelift, the models with V6 TDI engines were adapted to the Euro 6 emissions standard, the stop-start system was modified and the 8-speed automatic transmission was given a coasting function (freewheel).

Engines

The engine range of the Touareg has been revised compared to its predecessor. Only the two V6 engines were taken over from the predecessor, but thanks to their reduced weight and integrated thermal management they are significantly more economical than in the previous version. A 4.2-liter V8 TDI from Audi and a hybrid based on a 3-liter TSI are new.

A hybrid version is also available for the Touareg C2. It consists of a V6 TSI supercharged engine with 245 kW (333 hp) and a 34 kW electric motor with an 80 kg nickel-metal-hydride battery . A full hybrid drive in parallel construction was chosen as the hybrid variant; in this drive concept, the combustion engine, the electric motor and the transmission are on one shaft. The electric motor, which works as a generator in this drive concept, recovers kinetic energy during braking, which is temporarily stored in the battery. The individual outputs of the electric machine and the internal combustion engine add up to a total system output of 279 kW. At speeds of up to 50 km / h it is possible to drive purely electrically. In this case, the deactivated V6 TSI is decoupled from the eight-speed automatic via a disconnect clutch in order to avoid drag torque losses . According to VW, the consumption is around 8.2 l / 100 km. It can tow up to 3500 kg.

All engine versions are coupled with permanent all-wheel drive.

Exhaust scandal

In the course of the exhaust gas scandal in the automotive industry, which has been ongoing since September 2015, the German Federal Transport Minister Alexander Dobrindt announced that vehicles of the VW Touareg 3.0 V6 TDI type from the production period 2014 to 2017 have a cut-off device that was not specified in the type approval and that the exhaust gas treatment in Road traffic reduced or completely switched off.

In December 2017 it became known that these vehicles had to be recalled due to illegal defeat devices in the engine software. This affects 57,600 vehicles worldwide and 25,800 in Germany.

Furnishing

The equipment features include a CD sound system with touchscreen , on-board computer with information screen, cruise control , multifunction leather steering wheel, 17-inch alloy wheels and two-zone air conditioning . In addition, there are new and advanced assistance systems such as the optional Lane Assist , a lane departure warning system , which alerts the driver if the car without flashing signal leaves the track. Other systems are the radar-controlled ACC distance control and the so-called Area View , which uses cameras in the radiator grille, exterior mirrors and tailgate to show the entire area around the vehicle on the information screen. Furthermore, there is an electrically operated tailgate on request, which can be opened by kicking the Easy Open for a surcharge , and a panoramic sliding roof.

innovation

Volkswagen has further developed the adaptive high beam assistant in the new Touareg and introduced a world first ( Dynamic Light Assist , the so-called " glare-free high beam " or " vertical cut-off line "), which is able to block out vehicles ahead or oncoming vehicles to illuminate the immediate surroundings with high beam at the same time.

Fund

In addition to more headroom, the knee room has grown from 68 to 104 millimeters. The rear seat bench can be moved lengthways by 160 millimeters. The rear compartment has a volume of 580 to 1642 liters.
