Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test (2014) |
The VW Passat B8 (Type 3G) is a mid-range vehicle from Volkswagen that was presented to the public at the 2014 Paris Motor Show . It has been possible to order the vehicle since July 21, 2014, and delivery began in November 2014. It replaces the VW Passat B7 . For the first time, the Passat is based on the modular transverse matrix , which means that the interior space can be enlarged while the exterior length remains roughly the same.
The Passat B8 was also voted European Car of the Year 2015 .
For the 2020 model year (from June 2019), Volkswagen is offering the Passat B8 as a facelift. In addition to external changes to the body, there are new equipment features and a renaming of the equipment variants.
Equipment
Equipment variants
As with most current VW models, in addition to the basic Trendline equipment, there is also the upscale Comfortline equipment variant and the Highline luxury equipment . In addition, the GTE equipment is offered as standard for the plug-in hybrid Passat GTE and the Alltrack off-road variant for the Passat Variant.
With the facelift for the 2020 model year, the naming of the equipment variants was revised. The basic equipment is now simply called the Passat or Passat Variant , Business describes the upscale and Elegance the luxury variant. There is also a revised version of the Passat GTE and the Passat Alltrack .
- The Passat Alltrack was introduced in June 2015 and is only available as a Variant (station wagon) version. The Alltrack has all-wheel drive (4Motion) and is 28 millimeters higher. Selectable engine variants were three 2.0-liter TDI with outputs of 110 kW, 140 kW and 176 kW and a 2.0-liter TSI petrol engine with 162 kW. The standard equipment of the exterior includes roof rails, wheel arch trim in black, underrun protection in a stainless steel look, plastic paneling on the front and rear bumpers with trim strips in chrome and matt as well as on the vehicle sides.
Driver assistance systems
The VW Passat B8 offers a variety of driver assistance systems such as adaptive cruise control , pedestrian detection , blind spot assistants and lane departure warning systems . In addition, some systems were first introduced in a car. Including Emergency Assist , which takes over complete control of the vehicle. In a medical emergency with the associated inactivity of the driver, the vehicle continues to drive independently and prompts the driver to take over the steering by means of acoustic signals and brief brake jolts. If this does not react, the car brakes to a standstill and activates the hazard warning lights.
Another new feature is the Trailer Assist, which supports reversing with a trailer. With the help of the joystick for the rearview mirror adjustment, the driver can specify the direction in which the trailer should turn. The system automatically calculates the required steering movements.
The parking assistant has also been further developed. The Passat was the first car in the world to be able to park forward independently in parking spaces .
Variant used as a patrol car in blue / silver / yellow livery
Engines
The engine range has been revised. Compared to their predecessors, the performance of the diesel engines has been increased with the same cubic capacity. High- performance versions of the 2.0 TDI with biturbo and SCR catalytic converter are new . As a petrol engine, two variants of the 1.4 TSI are initially available at the model launch. At the end of 2018, the petrol engines were replaced by variants with particle filters. With the GTE version, the Passat is also available as a plug-in hybrid for the first time .

Plug-in hybrid (GTE)
A plug-in hybrid drive is used in the Passat GTE, which is comparable to that of the VW Golf GTE . Externally, the Passat GTE differs only slightly from the Passat models powered by internal combustion engines in terms of the lettering on the back, the decorative strip on the front and the C-shaped daytime running lights. The connection for the charging cable is on the front, but unlike the Golf GTE, not behind the central brand logo, but behind another flap in the radiator grille on the driver's side.

Other technology
The electrical system of the Passat B8 consists of an interior and an engine compartment wiring harness . The interior cable set consists of 473 cables with a total length of 952 m with 692 contacts in 123 plugs and a total weight of 12.2 kg. The engine compartment cable set consists of 242 cables with 354 contacts in 53 plugs and a total weight of 7.4 kg.
Another innovation compared to the predecessor are the optionally available LED headlights, which are available in two different versions - as reflector headlights without cornering lights and as projection lights with cornering lights.
Passat B8 in China
In China , three versions of the Passat B8 are sold. The estate version corresponds to the European version, but is sold as a VW Variant or VW Alltrack . As with the previous model, the sedan is only available in a version that is around ten centimeters longer. Since the model name "Passat" is used there for the North American Passat generation , the long version is sold as the VW Magotan .
