The Volkswagen EA489 basic transporter or Hormiga (Spanish for ant ) was a small, four-wheeled flatbed truck made by Volkswagen . It was produced from 1975 to 1979. The vehicle was powered by an air-cooled Beetle engine, which was located under the cab and powered the front wheels, which were suspended from double wishbones . In the Hormiga, the engine was behind the front axle, in other variants in front of it. The rear axle was rigid and suspended from leaf springs. The maximum speed specified was 85 km / h. The curb weight was 1290 kg.

The four - cylinder boxer engine with 1584 cm³ displacement and 37 kW (50 PS) at 4000 rpm was also found in the Type 1 ( VW Beetle ) and Type 2 ( VW bus ) models .

Designed as a cheap commercial vehicle for third world markets , it had a ladder frame and spartan equipment. It should also be able to operate without a dense network of dealers or customer service. Various variants of the vehicle were produced as a small series of 2600 in Hanover as CKD kits and in Mexico and sold in Turkey with a driver's cab with a modified T2 front sheet and roof as EA 489 , in Indonesia as Mitra and in Mexico as Hormiga . In the Philippines it was called Trakbayan .
