The Volkswagen Polo V is the fifth generation of the Polo and was produced by Volkswagen . He was a five-door in March 2009 hatchback -car on the Geneva Motor Show presented; the three-door model was presented in September 2009 at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main .

The Polo V could be ordered from March 5, 2009. When production began at the end of March 2009, it replaced its predecessor, the Polo IV . The first cars were delivered in June 2009.

The Polo V is considered a small car ; it is similarly long and wide as the VW Golf II , but slightly higher.

Model history

General

Technically, the Polo V (type 6R) is based on the same platform as the Audi A1 8X and Seat Ibiza 6J . It is longer, wider and lower than the previous model. The trunk holds 280 liters in the standard setting and can be increased to 952 liters by folding down the rear seat. The shape of the Polo is strongly based on the VW Golf VI , especially in the front area .

For the first time in a Polo, a 7-speed dual clutch transmission and radio navigation systems with touchscreen controls are available. Since the end of May 2010, as an optional bi- xenon headlights with static cornering lights and LED - daytime running lights , an electrically operable panoramic and since mid-September 2010 sunroof offered.

The drag coefficient (c w value) is 0.32.

Facelift

The Polo (Type 6C) , which had been upgraded with a facelift , had been on sale since April 22, 2014 . Nevertheless, the designation 6R can be found in the vehicle documents of the first facelift models, which can lead to problems when ordering spare parts.

There were changes to the front and rear aprons and the rear lights. LED headlights replace the previously available bi-xenon headlights (except for the BlueGT and the CrossPolo). All engines were revised and met the Euro 6 emissions standard. The 1.4-liter three-cylinder diesel engine (average consumption 3.1 l / 100 km in the Polo BlueMotion) and the 1.0-liter three-cylinder petrol engine were new to the range.

Equipment (Germany)

The basic Trendline model was most recently available at a basic price of 12,750 euros. The standard equipment includes electric windows (only for the front doors on the five-door model), power steering , 14-inch steel wheels, central locking and a height-adjustable driver's seat. An air conditioning was as an option only together with a CD - Radio available. The choice of additional equipment was also limited. The Trendline models had H4 headlights, whereas the other models were equipped with combined H7 / H1 headlights for low and high beam.

From the Comfortline equipment line , electric window lifters are standard for all doors. The basic equipment also includes, among other things, 15-inch steel wheels, various chrome elements in the interior and on the radiator grille, a padded dashboard , door handles and exterior mirror caps in vehicle color, an armrest between the front seats, seat covers in two colors to choose from, passenger seat with height adjustment, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors, central locking with radio remote control , air conditioning and a rear parking aid . The rear seat bench and backrest can also be folded down asymmetrically and the luggage compartment has a double floor.

In addition to the steering wheel , gear lever and hand lever in leather, the highest equipment variant, Highline , also includes heated sports seats at the front with high-quality covers, a multifunction display and a tire pressure monitoring system. The exterior equipment includes 15-inch alloy wheels, fog lights , headlight cleaning system and extended chrome elements on the lower grille.

The versions for Austria and Switzerland differ in details.

safety

All vehicles are equipped as standard with ABS with brake assist , ESP with electronic differential lock , ASR and engine drag torque control and a hill start assist . Driver and front passenger airbags and head and side airbags for the front seats are included in the standard equipment. Head airbags and belt tensioners for the rear seats are available at an additional cost.

In Euro NCAP - Crash test the Polo V was evaluated in 2009 with five stars out of five. In the assessment of the occupant safety of adults, it achieved 90 percent and in the occupant safety of children 86 percent of the maximum possible number of points. In the area of pedestrian protection, he received 41 percent of the points. The standard safety equipment received 71 percent of the points.

Special models

On the occasion of the 2010 Soccer World Cup in South Africa , Volkswagen offered the special Team model from the end of December 2009 to the end of December 2010 . The basic equipment based on the Comfortline model has been supplemented with darkened rear and side windows, leather steering wheel, heated sports seats for driver and front passenger, fog lights , cruise control system , rain sensor , automatically dimming interior mirror and CD radio.

Between the end of December 2010 and the end of December 2011, Volkswagen offered the Style special model , which has similar basic equipment with darkened side and rear windows, heated front seats, air conditioning, automatically dimming interior mirrors, CD radio and 15-inch alloy wheels. The exterior mirror housings are always painted black, regardless of the color of the vehicle. A package called Style Plus is available as an option, which includes 16-inch light-alloy wheels and a panoramic glass sliding roof. In contrast to the Team special model , the Style version is not based on the Comfortline , but on the Trendline model.

The Match special model was available from December 2011 to early 2013 . Polo Life was then published , which expired in spring 2014. The equipment is comparable to the Polo Match ; it differs mainly in the standard climatronic and the large RCD 310 radio system.

The Fresh special model has been available since the revised Polo 6C was launched in April 2014 . In addition to its own color scheme and chrome-plated door sills, it has darkened taillights, LED license plate lights and black painted exterior mirrors, which have not yet been available in any of the other model series. It also offers sports seats, aluminum-look pedals and a leather steering wheel with colored stitching as standard. Otherwise, the equipment largely corresponds to the Comfortline , with the additional comfort package (cruise control system, automatic headlights, drowsiness detection, windshield wiper control by rain sensor), the connectivity package (hands-free system and media-in socket) and the "Composition Color" radio.

Unlike other VW model series, the Polo 6C was not offered as a CUP special model for the 2014 World Cup , but with a CUP package in which various other special equipment packages were combined.

In 2015, the Polo was available as a special Club & Lounge model. The special model was based on the Comfortline equipment and had, among other things, special upholstery / decors and the LOUNGE badge on the front side panels. It had aluminum rims (185/60 R15), dark red taillights, darkened windows from the B-pillar, leather-covered fittings such as gear knob, steering wheel and handbrake handle with colored decorative stitching, special floor mats, fog lights with cornering lights, light / rain sensor, coming / Leaving home function, cruise control system, interior mirror with automatic dimming, automatic air conditioning, drowsiness detection and the “Composition Color” radio with six loudspeakers.

The Lounge Plus package with extras such as 16-inch wheels (215/45) on aluminum rims, LED headlights and license plate lighting, a headlight cleaning system and warning light for the washing water level was available for an extra charge.

VW has been offering the ALLSTAR special model since the end of December 2015 .

VW has been offering the special SOUND model since the end of December 2016.

Model variants

In the course of time, different versions of the Polo V were offered, which differ from the standard version in terms of basic equipment; some of them have a modified body or an engine that is not available for the normal model.

Polo BlueMotion

VW Polo BlueMotion (2009-2014)
Rear view

In addition to the five-door production version of the Polo V also was at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2009 concept car Polo concept BlueMotion presented. The close-to-vehicle is of a newly developed 3-cylinder common rail - diesel engine with 1.2 liter displacement and 55 kW (75 hp) power. According to Volkswagen, the consumption is 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and the CO 2 emissions are 87 grams per kilometer. In addition to the changes that have already been made to the BlueMotion version of the Polo IV compared to the normal production model, the BlueMotion version of the Polo V also has a start-stop system , the possibility of brake energy recovery and a multifunction display with recommended gear for selecting the most economical gear.

The series version of the Polo V BlueMotion was presented at the IAA in Frankfurt am Main in September 2009 and has been available for order since December 14, 2009. The vehicle is available in two versions, both of which have the same motor. According to the manufacturer, the first variant (Polo BlueMotion 87g) consumes 3.3 liters of diesel per 100 kilometers and is only available with a limited selection of special equipment. The second variant (Polo BlueMotion 89g) should consume an average of 3.4 liters of fuel, but is available with more extensive special equipment.

The reason for this measure is the classification of the vehicles in so-called inertia classes, on the basis of which the specified braking effect of the roller dynamometer is determined when measuring consumption. This classification is not based on the curb weight of the vehicles, but on the basis of the curb weight plus all available special equipment. By restricting the available equipment, the Polo BlueMotion 87g is classified in a lower flywheel mass class, which enables lower consumption values when measured.

CrossPolo

VW CrossPolo (2010-2014)
Rear view

The CrossPolo was officially presented in March 2010 at the Geneva Motor Show. The vehicle, which is only available with five doors, differs from the normal version of the Polo in its off-road look with its own front and rear apron, plastic covers on the fenders, side sills and doors, silver anodized roof rails, standard fog lights and 17-inch alloy wheels. The exterior mirror housings are always painted silver, regardless of the color of the vehicle. The standard equipment includes sports seats for the driver and front passenger, a leather steering wheel and central locking with radio remote control.

The engines available are gasoline engines from 51 to 77 kW and diesel engines from 55 to 77 kW. The CrossPolo has a chassis with around 15 millimeters more ground clearance, but is only partially suitable for off-road use due to the lack of all-wheel drive.

Advance sales of the CrossPolo, which is produced in the Volkswagen plant in Uitenhage , South Africa , began in early March 2010. The first vehicles were delivered in summer 2010.

Polo GTI

VW Polo GTI (2014-2017)

The Polo GTI was presented together with the CrossPolo at the Geneva Motor Show in early March 2010 and has been available for order since the end of May 2010.

By 2014, 1.4 liter were TSI - Otto engines with turbo and supercharger installed, the maximum power (180 hp) standard by a seven-speed of 132 kW double-clutch transmission is transmitted to the front wheels. According to the manufacturer, the vehicle should accelerate from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.9 seconds and reach a top speed of 229 km / h. At the same time, the more modern technology is said to have reduced consumption by 25 percent compared to the previous model, the Polo GTI Cup Edition, which had the same power output, and is now 5.9 liters per 100 kilometers. This would correspond to CO 2 emissions of 139 grams per kilometer.

On the outside, the Polo GTI differs from the normal production version of the Polo with its independently designed front and rear aprons, widened side skirts, roof spoiler, standard fog lights, red-painted brake calipers , 17-inch alloy wheels and a chrome-plated twin tailpipe. It also has a sports suspension that is around 15 millimeters lower and an extended electronic limited-slip differential , which is intended to reduce the vehicle's tendency to understeer by braking the front wheel on the inside of the bend when cornering quickly . In addition, the vehicle battery has been relocated from the engine compartment to the spare wheel well to optimize weight distribution, reducing the usable luggage compartment volume from 280 to 204 liters.

For the 2014 facelift, the 1.4 TSI turbo / compressor engine was replaced by a 1.8 TSI turbo engine with an output of 141 kW. Since then, the model has been available with either a manual 6-speed gearbox or a 7-speed DSG . The version with manual gearbox has 320 Nm while the DSG variant is still limited to 250 Nm.

Polo R WRC Street

VW Polo R WRC Street

In December 2012, the particularly sporty top model of the model series, the “Polo R WRC Street”, was presented in Monaco. The street version of the actual rally car VW Polo R WRC is limited to 2500 pieces. The turbocharged 2.0-liter TSI petrol engine has an output of 162 kW (220 hp) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. The front-wheel drive Polo R WRC Street accelerates to 100 km / h in 6.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 243 km / h. A sports suspension with a lowered body and the XDS electronic limited- slip differential are standard equipment for better road holding.

Newly designed front and rear aprons with black diffusers at the front and rear, standard 18-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, blue-painted brake calipers and a distinctive rear wing are just as noticeable as the blue-gray stickers of the vehicle on the bonnet and the vehicle side.

The interior of the Polo R WRC Street can be recognized by the Alcantara covers (also on the steering wheel) and aluminum applications.

The reason for production is the manufacturer's return to the World Rally Championship . Based on the 2500 pieces required by the regulations, the Polo R WRC Street was also limited to this number. However, this is of no significance for the approval of the polo as a rally vehicle, as the requirements of the regulations have already been met by building the required units of any polo. The first vehicles were delivered in September 2013.

Polo CityVan

This van has three doors and two seats . It is available in four versions:

  1. Polo CityVan: petrol 1.2l / 44kW / 60PS,
  2. Polo CityVan TDI: Diesel 1.2l / 55kW / 75PS,
  3. Polo CityVan TDI: Diesel 1.6l / 66kW / 90PS,
  4. Polo CityVan BlueMotion Technology TDI: Diesel 1.6l / 66kW / 90PS

Polo Sedan / Vento

The notchback version Polo Sedan was presented on June 2, 2010 in Moscow . The vehicle has a wheelbase that has been extended by 82 millimeters and was specially developed for the requirements of the Russian market. The sedan produced at the Volkswagen plant in Kaluga is available with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an output of 77 kW (105 hp) and a choice of a five-speed manual transmission or a six- speed Tiptronic automatic transmission.

In India, the model with better basic equipment is offered under the name “Vento”, but it cannot be called the successor to the namesake . The vehicles are produced in the Indian Volkswagen plant in Chakan . A gasoline engine and a diesel engine, each with a displacement of 1.6 liters and an output of 77 kW (105 hp), are available as engines. The vehicle is largely identical to the Indian Škoda Rapid .

Engines

Three gasoline engines with 44 to 63 kW (60 to 86 hp) and three diesel engines with 55 to 77 kW output (75 to 105 hp) were available for the market launch . The petrol engines were taken over from the previous model, but were technically revised to meet the limit values of the Euro 5 emissions standard and, in the case of the 63 kW engine, also to increase the output. The 1.6-liter diesel engines with common rail injection , which are equipped with a particle filter as standard , have been completely redeveloped. In November 2009, a newly developed 1.2-liter TSI petrol engine with an output of 77 kW (105 PS) was introduced. Since December 2009, this engine with direct injection and turbocharging has also been available in combination with the 7-speed dual clutch transmission .

From March 2010, the Polo with a 63 kW petrol engine was also available as a bi- fuel version that can be filled with petrol and LPG . In addition to the normal 45-liter fuel tank, it has a 52-liter LPG tank in the spare wheel well. The engine, which has been adapted to the higher thermal loads, meets the Euro 4 emissions standard and has an output of 60 kW (82 hp) in LPG operation. At the end of June 2010, the sale of this model was stopped until further notice due to capacity reasons. A bi-fuel model has been offered again since February 2011. Its 1.6-liter petrol engine has an output of 60 kW (82 hp) in gas and petrol operation and complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard.

Since May 2010, the 1.2-liter diesel engine with 55 kW (75 hp) output, originally only used in the Polo BlueMotion, has also been available for the normal version of the Polo, where it replaces the 1.6-liter engine with 55 kW. The 1.2-liter gasoline engine with 51 kW (70 hp) has also been available with the BlueMotion package since November 2010 .
