The VW Phaeton was a four-door notchback sedan in the luxury class of the Volkswagen brand . The production was a joint project between the Volkswagen factory in Zwickau and the Transparent Factory in Dresden , where the final assembly was largely done by hand. From the start of production on December 11, 2001 to the end of production on March 18, 2016, 84,235 vehicles were built.
Origin of the model name
The Phaeton study was presented to the public at the IAA 1999 - at that time still with a hatchback - under the name " Concept D " . At the same time, the new V10 TDI diesel engine was presented for the first time . During development, the Phaeton was known under the project name “D1” - this is also the internal type designation for the first generation Phaeton.
Phaeton is the name of the son of the sun god Helios . As a model name, the name is not new. Phaeton used to be the name given to the construction method for open stately horse-drawn carriages , where the rulers themselves steered. This designation was later adopted for the open touring cars . After 1900 there was a Benz Phaeton . In 1915 the luxury vehicle manufacturer Horch brought a Phaeton onto the market. In the 1920s, the US company Packard manufactured a car called the Phaeton. In 1930 the manufacturer Škoda also had this model name. Following the tradition of the Audi forerunner Horch, this model name was chosen.
Characteristic
The VW Phaeton has been on the market since May 2002. Since November 2002 it was also offered in a long version, which offered more legroom in the rear . Characteristic features of the Phaeton are its luxurious interior and the permanent all-wheel drive " 4Motion ". It has some technical features, such as:
- the self-luminous license plate ; (This has been replaced by a license plate light with light emitting diodes on successor models)
- the draft-free, individually adjustable climate control for each passenger
- the then highest ever reached torsional rigidity of a car - body
- a Bluetooth car phone with SIM Access Profile (advantage: no mechanical connection to the vehicle required)
- Adaptive cruise control with "environment monitoring" and active range from 0 km / h to 200 km / h (30 km / h to 180 km / h in the first series)
- Lane change assistant "SideAssist" (from GP1)
- Keyless access and start " Keyless Access " (special equipment)
- electric tailgate actuation (special equipment)
- LED - daytime running lights (from GP1)
The Phaeton's platform also serves as the basis for the Bentley Continental GT , Bentley Continental GTC , Bentley Continental Flying Spur and the Porsche Panamera . This platform is manufactured at the Volkswagen plant in Zwickau and delivered to Great Britain, where the three Bentley models are completed.
Engines and technical data
The last engines had permanent 4Motion all-wheel drive and Airmotion air suspension as standard . Earlier models were also offered with front-wheel drive and manual transmission, which forced the long front overhang. Alternatively, a four-seater variant and / or a version with an extended wheelbase was also available. The weakest engine - a V6 TDI - which was only released in 2004, caused the registration numbers to rise significantly and became the best-selling Phaeton model. The V10 TDI has not been offered since the 2006 model year - five years after its appearance - because it could not comply with the Euro 4 emissions standard that was applicable at the time and a diesel particulate filter would have been necessary. In conjunction with the V10 TDI, this does not fit under the Phaeton platform. The group management found an alternative solution to be too expensive. A particle filter system has been available for the V10 TDI since 2009, which causes the green particulate matter sticker to be issued for journeys in all environmental zones. The following information relates to the basic model.

New registrations / sales figures
Between 2002 and 2018, a total of 31,988 VW Phaetons were newly registered in the Federal Republic of Germany. With 3,211 units, 2005 was the most successful sales year. The new registrations each year were below those of the competitors Audi A8 / S8 , BMW 7 Series and Mercedes-Benz S-Class .
The VW group originally wanted to sell 20,000 Phaetons a year worldwide. Sales of the Phaeton remained far below expectations over the entire production period.
Because sales were too low, VW stopped selling the Phaeton in the USA in the summer of 2006 after around 3,500 units had been sold. In 2007 a reintroduction was planned for 2009; the economic crisis until 2009/10 made these plans obsolete.
In China, the market for the Phaeton has developed positively. 1,400 new vehicles were sold there from January to October 2009, and 2,000 sales were expected in 2010. The high demand in Asia led to a 30 percent increase in production in 2010. This set a sales record of around 7,500 units.
Overall, the sales figures fell short of expectations. The Phaeton is one of the most loss-making car models in the recent past. The loss per vehicle sold is estimated at 28,000 euros.
End of production
Production of the Volkswagen Phaeton officially ended on March 18, 2016. Die Welt reported: “In the midst of the emissions crisis with its as yet unpredictable financial consequences, the top management around Matthias Müller pulled the rip cord. [...] If possible, an exhibition world on e-mobility would be desirable [for the Transparent Factory of Volkswagen in Dresden]. "
