The VW Volksbus is a range of omnibus chassis from the Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus brand , which is produced by the commercial vehicle manufacturer MAN Latin America mainly for the South American market. A wide range of chassis enables use both in city traffic and in overland traffic. The production of the model series began in 1993.

Volkswagen Caminhões e Ônibus achieved a market share of around 28% in South America in 2006 with the VW Volksbus. After a relative increase of 22% compared to the same quarter of the previous year, 1,700 copies were delivered in the 1st quarter of 2007. After China and ahead of the USA, Brazil is the country with the second highest production volume of buses in the world.

The wheelbases differ depending on the chassis and total weight. A special feature is the chassis of the VW 18.320 EOT long-distance bus with its electronic components. The chassis has the same Cummins ISC machine as the VW Constellation Titan Tractor , but with higher power and higher torque . The new electronic version retains the familiar properties of the mechanical version. These include a modular chassis, air suspension and standard aluminum wheels. The body is a maximum of 12 m long, if a luggage rack is attached to the rear, 13.2 m.

Chassis and superstructures

The Volksbus chassis are produced in three basic versions as mini- / midibus ( front engine ), solo bus ( front or rear engine ) and articulated bus ( pusher ) for a gross total weight of 5 to 26 tons. Depending on the model, the engines used come from MAN Diesel & Turbo , Caterpillar or Cummins .

Depending on the chassis, the bodies are available from the bodywork companies Marcopolo , Neobus , Mascarello , Comil , Irizar and CAIO .
