The VW Touran is a compact people carrier ( compact van ) from Volkswagen . Like the Golf V, it is based on the PQ35 platform and has independent wheel suspension at the front and rear, while the VW Caddy (type 2K) based on the same platform has a rigid axle at the rear . The Touran is equipped with five seats as standard. Two more seats are available at an additional cost; they can be lowered into the loading floor of the trunk and folded out if necessary.
The Touran has been on the German market since February 2003 and was the best-selling car in its class from 2004 to 2011. A total of almost two million copies of the Touran I were sold. It is manufactured in the Volkswagen plant in Wolfsburg (the main plant of Volkswagen AG) (see also Auto 5000 ). Another production takes place in the Anting plant of the automobile manufacturer Shanghai Volkswagen . A CKD assembly for the Indonesian market has been carried out by Garuda Mataram Motor since 2010 . The Touran is marketed on the Japanese market under the name VW Golf Touran .
Touran (2003-2006)
Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test |
The Touran was offered in the equipment variants Conceptline, Trendline and Highline. The standard safety equipment includes driver and front passenger airbags, front side airbags and head airbags for the first and second row of seats as well as the electronic stabilization program (ESP). All models have a CD radio as standard; The air conditioning is part of the standard equipment from the Trendline equipment upwards.
From January 2006 to September 2006 there was a special model: in Germany the Touran Goal , in Austria the Touran Family . These models included some extras and a few savings compared to the Trendline trim level. The basic price was around 1000 euros less than the comparable standard models.
With a wheelbase of 2678 mm, the body dimensions varied between 4391 and 4407 mm in length, 1794 and 1799 mm in width and 1620 and 1674 mm in height.
Touran (GP, 2006-2010)
From November 2006 the revised Touran ("Great Product Upgrade", GP for short) was delivered. Among other things, the front section, the rear lights, the rear bumper strip and the color of the dashboard were changed. A new engine is also available: the 1.4 TSI with 125 kW (170 PS), which was already used in the Golf GT, can now also be ordered in the Touran. The vehicles are now 4397 mm long, 1794 mm wide and 1682 mm high. The curb weight is between 1427 and 1622 kg.
In 2007 the CrossTouran came on the market, a model variant with off-road optics (off-road = off-road vehicle ) and bad -road chassis (harder suspension and 12 millimeters more ground clearance ), but lacking all-wheel drive ( called 4Motion at VW ) but without actual off-road capabilities.
In 2008, VW launched the special model “United” on the occasion of the European Football Championship , followed by the special model “Freestyle” in 2009. Both were based on the Trendline equipment and were equipped as standard with, among other things, a radio navigation system and light alloy wheels.
Touran (GP2, 2010-2015)
At the 2010 Leipzig Motor Show , VW presented the second major facelift of the Touran, which had been on offer since August 2010. Compared to the Touran GP, all body parts have been changed with the exception of the doors. Visually, the Touran is similar to the VW Sharan II . The Touran's trunk volume is at least 695 liters. The luggage compartment can be increased to a size of 1989 liters through modifications in the interior. This makes the Touran also suitable as a delivery van. A sixth and seventh seat are also optionally available.
The basic equipment is now called Trendline, the middle equipment variant Comfortline. All models now have air conditioning and power windows front and rear as standard. For the first time, a large panoramic sliding roof is available as an option for the Touran.
Only TSI and common rail TDI engines are offered.
The new basic engine is the 1.2 TSI with 77 kW (105 PS). This is the first time a petrol engine with BlueMotion Technology is offered in the Touran . Thanks to a longer gear ratio, friction - optimized cardan shafts, brake energy recovery and a start-stop system , the fuel consumption measured by the NEDC should be 5.9 l / 100 km, which corresponds to CO 2 emissions of 139 grams per kilometer. The previous entry-level engine with 75 kW (102 PS) had a fuel consumption of 8.1 l / 100 km and CO 2 emissions of 193 g / km.
Engines
The Touran I was available with petrol engines from 75 kW (102 PS) to 125 kW (170 PS) and diesel engines from 66 kW (90 PS) to 130 kW (177 PS). In the model years 2006 to 2010, all diesel engines were available with a soot particle filter for an extra charge ; this filter has been standard since model year 2011. Most of the engines can be combined with a direct shift gearbox (DSG), which enables "jerk-free shifting" without interruption of tractive power with low consumption at the same time.
In September 2004 the Touran Hy-Motion with hydrogen fuel cell drive was presented. It did not go into series production. The Touran EcoFuel with natural gas drive , which is referred to as "quasi-monovalent", has been available since the end of May 2006 . In other words, the car is primarily powered by natural gas; the approx. 13 liter additional fuel tank only serves as a mobility reserve. The level is displayed separately for natural gas and petrol; the separate filler necks are located under a common tank flap. In 2009 the 2.0 Ecofuel engine was replaced by the 1.4 TSI Ecofuel. The new engine is also optionally available with the 7-speed direct shift gearbox (DSG). The petrol tank volume has been reduced to 11 liters. From November 2009, the natural gas tanks of the five-seater version hold 24 kg and 18 kg of the 7-seater.
Since model year 2012 (May 2011), the BlueMotion Technology models with 7-speed DSG for the 1.6 l 77 kW (105 PS) and 6-speed DSG for the 2.0 l 103 kW (140 PS) TDI engine available.

China
The original Touran is still running today (2018) in China at S-VW from the assembly line (Shanghai) with GP2 front and GP1 rear (cross lights). There is only one engine (1.4 TSI). The Touran II is also offered as the "Touran L". Tourans were already used as taxis for the 2010 Expo in Shanghai.
Filmography
In the 2006 film "The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift", a green Touran I is used as the Hulk Mobile.
