VW EA188
The Volkswagen development order 188 refers to a series of diesel engines of various types from the Volkswagen Group, which are equipped with either two-valve technology or four-valve technology and pump-nozzle injection . The EA188 covers the power spectrum from 45 to 230 kW. There are in-line engines with three, four or five cylinders as well as a V10 engine with displacement sizes from 1.2 to 4.9 liters. EA188 engines were first used in 1998 in the VW Passat B5 . The EA 188 series was developed from 1996 onwards from the previous EA 180 series. The EA 188 was replaced by the EA 189 series.

technology
1.2-liter TDI and 1.4-liter TDI
The 1.2-liter TDI engine and the 1.4-liter TDI engine have a similar design. The main difference is the material of the cylinder block. The 1.4-liter TDI engine is made of gray cast iron; the 1.2-liter TDI engine is made of die-cast aluminum with cast-in gray cast iron cylinder liners. Both engines are water-cooled, turbocharged three-cylinder in-line engines. The piston bosses and the connecting rod eyes of the engines are trapezoidal. The engine's six valves are actuated by a timing belt-driven overhead camshaft. The pump-nozzle unit is housed in the cylinder head and is operated by an additional cam on the camshaft via a roller rocker arm. The injection pressure is up to 2050 bar. In order to compensate for undesired inertial forces of the engines, the engines have a balance shaft that runs opposite to the crankshaft. It is driven by the crankshaft via a chain that also drives the oil pump. A hydraulic chain tensioner ensures that the chain is taut. The engine's vacuum pump, which is driven by the camshaft, is installed on the cylinder head. The oil filter housing of the engines with paper filter is upright, the engine coolant pump is integrated in the cylinder block. For weight reasons, the exhaust manifold of the 1.2-liter TDI engine is made of sheet steel; part of the exhaust gas is returned to the combustion chamber, before it is cooled by a heat exchanger. A VTG turbocharger is used to charge the engine. The engine control is taken over by the "Bosch EDC 15P" engine control unit, which can operate the 1.2-liter TDI engine in "Sport" and "Eco" mode. The "Eco" mode reduces torque and power output. The engine control unit also controls the idling speed of the engine, which is reduced to 770 min −1 when the vehicle equipped with a 1.2 liter TDI engine rolls at more than 13 km / h , at low speed the idling speed is 850 min - 1 . In the 1.4-liter TDI engine, only one operating program is used that does not require any reduction in output. The 1.2 TDI engine with 45 kW (61 PS) was only installed in the Audi A2 and Lupo 3L. The 1.4 TDI engine with 55 kW (75 PS) was used in the Lupo, Polo (6N2) , Polo 9N, Seat Ibiza, Škoda Fabia and Audi A2, the later engines with 70 and 80 PS in the Polo 9N3, Škoda Fabia, Seat Ibiza, VW Fox.

The eight valves of the engines are operated by a toothed belt driven overhead camshaft. The pump-nozzle unit is housed in the cylinder head and is operated by an additional cam on the camshaft via a roller rocker arm. The injection pressure is up to 2050 bar. The engine's vacuum pump, which is driven by the camshaft, is installed on the cylinder head. The oil filter housing of the engines with paper filter is upright, the engine coolant pump is integrated in the cylinder block. Part of the exhaust gas is returned to the combustion chamber. Before that, it is cooled by a heat exchanger. A VTG turbocharger is used to charge the engine. The engine control is taken over by the Bosch EDC 15P engine control unit and from 2003 by the EDC 16.

2.0 liter TDI
The 2.0-liter TDI engine is a supercharged in-line four-cylinder engine and was developed from the 1.9 liter TDI engine. The increase in displacement compared to the base engine was achieved by enlarging the cylinder bore. The 2.0 TDI has a newly developed cross-flow aluminum cylinder head. The two overhead camshafts are driven together via a toothed belt. In addition to controlling the exhaust valve, the exhaust camshaft also drives the unit injector. In addition to controlling the intake valves, the intake camshaft also drives the tandem pump . Another innovation is a switchable cooler for exhaust gas recirculation and a new glow plug system. The 2.0 TDI engine with 100 kW (136 hp) was first used in the Touran at the beginning of 2003. The engines with DPF are equipped with either two-valve technology or four-valve technology.

2.5 liter TDI
The 2.5-liter TDI engine is a turbocharged five-cylinder in-line engine with water cooling and is manufactured from an aluminum alloy using low-pressure die casting. The cylinder liners are plasma-coated. The engine has a cross-flow two-valve cylinder head with an integrated pump-nozzle unit. This is actuated by an additional cam on the spur gear-driven overhead camshaft. The forged and cracked connecting rods are connected to the pistons via a trapezoidal connecting rod eye and a trapezoidal piston pin eye. The six-bearing crankshaft is equipped with an integrated vibration damper. The gear drive driven from there is carried out by eleven gears with 15 ° helical teeth, which are attached to the flywheel side of the engine. One gear each drive the camshaft, the coolant pump, the alternator, the oil pump and the power steering, including the air conditioning compressor. The oil filter is housed in a standing oil filter housing and has a paper insert. The oil cooler is integrated in the oil filter housing. The engine's exhaust manifold is made of cast iron, the exhaust gas is routed through a VTG turbocharger and some of it is returned to the combustion chamber. The engine is controlled by the engine control unit J623, the diesel control is taken over by the Bosch EDC 16 control unit. The 2.5-liter TDI engines are used in the T5 and Touareg and are therefore designed for both transverse and longitudinal installation. With the Touareg engine installed lengthways, the starter is mounted on the engine side, with the T5 mounted transversely on the gearbox side.

V10 TDI engine
The V10 TDI engine is a water-cooled and supercharged 90 ° V engine with ten cylinders, the engine block of which is made of aluminum. The bearing bridge is cast from cast iron. In order to absorb the forces that occur, the block and the bearing bridge are crossed by steel tie rods. A plasma coating is used on the liners. The forged and cracked connecting rods are connected to the pistons via a trapezoidal connecting rod eye and a trapezoidal and brass-reinforced piston pin eye. The cross-flow principle is used for the cylinder head. The fuel is injected using a pump-nozzle system and two-valve technology. Both the ancillary units and the two overhead camshafts are driven by spur gears. To reduce vibrations, the engine has a balance shaft, which also serves as the drive shaft for the oil pump. To dampen vibrations, a vibration damper is also attached, which is filled with silicone oil. The crankshaft is forged and has screwed-on tungsten counterweights. The crank pin offset is 18 ° and is necessary due to the four-stroke principle. The spur gear drive has 15 helical gears with a tooth angle of 15 °. In order to compensate for temperature-related play in the gear drive, there are link joints with compensating gears that automatically adjust their position to the engine temperature. As with the 2.5-liter engine, the power steering pump and air conditioning compressor are combined and driven by the gear train. The oil filter module is placed in the V-space of the engine. This contains the oil filter housing, oil filler neck and the oil cooler. The oil pan, made of two cast aluminum parts, is attached below the engine and contains the oil pump on the engine face in the oil sump. It works on the duocentric principle. Each cylinder bank of the engine has its own Bosch EDC 16 control unit. The exhaust manifolds lead the exhaust gas through two VTG turbochargers, with each cylinder bank having its own charger.
