The VW Golf VI (type 5K1) is officially the sixth series of the VW Golf passenger car , but is in fact a revised version of its predecessor. It came on the market in October 2008. A total of 2,850,000 copies of this type were built.

In November 2012, the Golf VI in Germany was replaced by the VW Golf VII , which is based on a newly developed platform (" MQB ").

The Golf VI largely corresponds to the Golf V based on the Group's internal platform A5 (PQ35) . Technical details and the design were changed. As with the predecessor, there are body variants, in addition to the compact sedan, the compact Golf Plus van and the Golf Variant estate and, since spring 2011, the newly developed Golf Cabriolet.

Model history

The Golf VI was presented in October 2008. Compared to its predecessor, the VW Golf V , the front and rear sections have been revised and the doors, roof, headlights and rear lights have been changed slightly. The steering wheel and the controls for air conditioning and radio have been changed. The safety equipment has been expanded to include a knee airbag for the driver. In addition, the soundproofing of the interior is better than its predecessor. This is achieved through an insulation film in the windshield and better seals on the doors and side windows. The blue instrument lighting introduced on the Golf IV has been changed to white.

When Euro NCAP - Crash test the sedan reached five stars in occupant protection (36 of 37 points). In the assessment of child safety, four out of five stars were achieved (41 out of 49 points). In terms of pedestrian protection, the Golf received three of the possible four stars with 22 out of 36 points. Other body styles were not rated.

At the beginning of 2012 there was a recall campaign of around 300,000 VW vehicles (models Eos, Golf, Jetta, Passat, Scirocco, Tiguan and T5) due to faults in the injection lines.

On November 10, 2012, the successor, the Golf VII , came onto the market as a two- and four-door station wagon with a tailgate. The Golf VI was produced in this version until December 2012.

Furnishing

Golf with 7-speed dual clutch transmission

The cars are equipped with two front airbags, two front side airbags and head-shoulder airbags for the side windows and a knee airbag for the driver; Rear side airbags can be ordered.

A parking assistant can be selected , in conjunction with a reversing camera. Furthermore, the adaptive chassis control DCC for automatic adjustment of the shock absorbers and an indirect tire pressure control system . Bi- xenon headlights can be ordered as special equipment; they are offered in conjunction with dynamic cornering lights . The taillights with LED technology can also be ordered as special equipment (standard on Golf R, from 2012 standard on Golf GTI and GTD).

The simplest equipment line is called Trendline. It includes the Climatic air conditioning . It also includes a multifunction display, electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors , power windows at the front and a rear window wiper . The technical standard equipment includes hill start assist , ABS , ESP with ASR , EDL , power steering , daytime running lights and central locking that can be controlled via the key.

The middle line with the name Comfortline offers, among other things, seats with lumbar support and height adjustment for the front passenger, a parking aid front and rear as well as a CD radio with front speakers. The highest equipment variant, Highline, includes heated sports seats at the front, Climatronic automatic air conditioning with separate temperature settings for driver and front passenger, fog lights with static cornering lights and 17-inch light-alloy wheels with wider tires.

Special models

For the Golf VI there have been some special models over the years:

Between December 2009 and December 2010, the TEAM special model was offered, which is based on the Comfortline equipment line. Standard equipment includes darkened windows from the B-pillar, 16-inch aluminum rims, heated seats and cruise control. This model can be recognized by the lettering on the C-pillar.

In January 2011 the Golf TEAM was replaced by the special STYLE model, which is now based on the Trendline basic version. The STYLE differs from the normal Golf, for example, in the badges attached to the B-pillars and the black painted exterior mirrors, winter package, light and vision package, fog lights, “Climatronic” air conditioning system and other equipment details.

The STYLE was replaced by the special MATCH model in December 2011 . This is also based on the Trendline basic version and offers a similar range of equipment as the previous special model.

At the same time, the Golf move was introduced, which could only be combined with a few weaker engines. External features of the move were the radiator grille and fog lights, both of which were decorated with chrome. In addition, the taillights were darkened. The lettering is on the C-pillars.

With a circulation of approx. 4,100 vehicles, the Golf GTI adidas rolled off the assembly line in May 2010. This contained the same engine as the normal GTI, but some additional equipment, such as bi-xenon headlights, darkened R-LEDs from the Golf R, 18-inch alloy wheels, door sill strips and partial leather seats in adidas design. The GTI adidas was only available in the colors solid black, tornado red and oryx white.

Since June 2011 there has been a special model for the 35th anniversary of the Golf GTI. The outside of the GTI Edition 35 can be recognized by the modified bumpers and the "35" lettering on the fenders. The number of headrests, seat centers and door sills can be found in the interior. The engine used is not the 2.0-liter turbo gasoline engine (EA888) known from the standard GTI, but the previous engine ( EA113 ), which is also equipped with a 2-liter displacement and turbocharger, but which now has 172 kW (235 hp) instead of the 155 kW (210 PS) of the normal GTI has an output. The EA113 with 199 kW (270 PS) is also installed in the Golf R and is equipped with a toothed belt drive for the camshafts, whereas the EA888 has a chain drive.

The Golf R was presented as the R32 successor on September 15, 2009 at the IAA in Frankfurt.

The Golf R is powered by a 2.0 l FSI inline four-cylinder with a turbocharger, which has an output of 199 kW (270 hp) at 6000 rpm and a torque of 350 Nm at 2500–5000 rpm. The car has 5th generation 4motion (all-wheel drive) as standard and is available with 6-speed manual transmission or optionally with 6-speed DSG. It was available as a two-door or four-door model, as well as a convertible. The standard equipment includes:

  • Independent front with bi-xenon and LED daytime running lights in the front bumper
  • Rear with double pipe exhaust and LED taillights
  • Interior with R logo and 2-colored sports seats, instruments with blue pointers
  • Sports suspension with 25mm lowering, ESP with sports mode, 17-inch brake system
  • 18-inch aluminum rims (7.5 J x 18) with 225/40 R18 tires

Almost all engines meet the Euro 5 emissions standard ; the only exception is the LPG model, which initially only met the requirements of the Euro 4 standard. Not all engines could be combined with all equipment variants. For the first time since the third generation , the Golf was no longer offered as a six-cylinder, as VW did without the VR6 engine in the current Golf R in favor of a turbocharged four-cylinder.

Petrol engines

Three 1.4-liter gasoline engines with 59 kW (80 PS), 90 kW (122 PS) and 118 kW (160 PS) outputs were offered for the Golf VI. The 90 kW and 118 kW units were TSI engines with gasoline direct injection and turbo charger or turbo charger and compressor . From March 2009 the Golf GTI was available with a 2.0-liter TSI engine with turbocharger and 155 kW (211 hp) output. At the end of 2009 a turbocharged 1.2-liter TSI engine with an output of 77 kW (105 PS) was introduced, which was supplemented with a variant with 63 kW (85 PS) in the 2011 model year.

The Golf R was presented at the IAA 2009  as the successor to the Golf R32 . The vehicle has a 2.0-liter TSI engine with turbocharger that develops a maximum output of 199 kW (270 hp) and a maximum torque of 350 Nm. The unit thus represented the most powerful series engine of a Golf to date.

In the course of the changeover to turbocharged engines within the Volkswagen brand, the originally available 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 75 kW (102 PS) output has not been offered since the 2011 model year. The 1.6-liter gasoline engine based on the EA-827 engine block was no longer available in a VW Golf after more than 20 years. However, the engine block was still offered in bi-fuel. The 1.4-liter engine with 59 kW (80 hp) was the last petrol engine in the Golf VI that was still delivered without a turbocharger.

Outside Europe, the Golf VI is offered with a 2.5-liter gasoline engine with five cylinders and around 170 hp. Compared to the more modern TSI engines, this is less economical, but much more robust; its average consumption is 9.1 l / 100 km.

Alternative fuels

Since the beginning of 2009, the Golf VI in the Trendline and Comfortline equipment lines with a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with 75 kW (102 hp) output has been available as a bi-fuel variant that can be filled with petrol or LPG . In addition to the normal 55 liter fuel tank, the vehicle has a 38 liter LPG tank in the spare wheel well. The engine, which has been adapted to the higher thermal loads, meets the Euro 5 emissions standard and has an output of 72 kW (98 hp) in LPG operation.

Diesel engines

All diesel engines work with common rail injection and are equipped with a particle filter as standard.

The 2.0-liter TDI engine is available in two versions: as a model with 103 kW (140 PS) and, since May 2009, also with 125 kW (170 PS). This so far most powerful diesel engine is only available in combination with the GTD model variant . The 2.0 TDI with 81 kW (110 PS) output was replaced by the 1.6 TDI in 2009.

A 1.6-liter TDI engine with 66 kW (90 hp) (only in some export countries) and 77 kW (105 hp) has been available since May 2009. The latter is optionally available with the BlueMotion Technology package, which is intended to reduce the vehicle's fuel consumption. The 2.0 TDI (103 kW) and 1.6 TDI (77 kW) Variant have also been available with 4Motion since May 2009 .
The Golf BlueMotion, based on the same 1.6 TDI engine, has also been available since October 2009, in which the standard consumption is further reduced with the help of an automatic start-stop system and brake energy recovery (recuperation brake).

Golf Blue-e-Motion

The vehicles in the Volkswagen electromobility test fleet are 4-door Golfs that are powered solely by a permanent magnet synchronous motor. With a weight of 1455 kg, it is 200 kg heavier than an equally powerful Diesel Golf with a TDI engine . The lithium-ion battery with a voltage of 324 volts and a storage capacity of 26.5 kWh consists of 180 cells in 30 packages, which are installed under the trunk (275 liters usable volume), under the back seat and in the center tunnel. A separate cooling system ensures a constant heat balance. The accumulator can be charged on the 230 volt low-voltage network via two sockets behind the "tank cap" and the VW emblem in the radiator grille . When braking, kinetic energy is converted back into electrical energy ( recuperation ), which can be selected in three stages  , in order to increase the range. Solar cells on the roof also charge the accumulator and, when the vehicle is stationary, supply the vehicle ventilation to cool the interior. The cars have a heated windscreen and heated seats . The model will be offered in 2014 based on the Golf VII .

Performance

The engine with 85 kW (115 PS) maximum output (50 kW / 68 PS continuous output) has a torque of 270  Newton meters (N m). The car can travel up to 150 km on one battery charge. If the maximum range is desired, the car drives with a maximum of 60 kW (82 PS), the top speed is limited and auxiliary consumers such as the air conditioning are regulated. At full power, the top speed is 135 km / h and the acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h is 11.8 s.

Golf Variant

Like the Golf VI, the Golf VI Variant continued to use the PQ35 platform on which the Golf V (sedan and Variant) was based. It came on the market in mid-May 2009 and was offered with nine different engine variants.

Production of the Golf VI Variant was discontinued in April 2013.

Golf convertible

The Golf VI Cabrio was on the market between June 2011 and March 2016, it was built by Volkswagen Osnabrück (formerly Karmann ) and has so far been offered with five different engine variants: the 1.2-liter TSI (105 PS) and 1.4 gasoline engines -Liter TSI (122 and 160 PS) and TDI diesel engines with 1.6 liters (105 PS) and 2.0 liters (140 PS). Since April 2012, a 2.0-liter TSI (210 PS) has also been available as a Golf Cabrio GTI. And since February 2013 the top model Golf R Cabrio with 2.0-liter TSI 195 kW (265 PS).
