In 1991 Ford and Volkswagen decided to set up a joint venture to offer vehicles in the MPV segment. The aim of the production was to position the two car companies clearly in the increasingly important market segment and thus to address the group of buyers of young families, who are regarded as the classic target group of the brands.

The development costs and investments in the necessary new plant were too high for both companies to bear them alone. So they founded the company Autoeuropa Automóveis , Lda in Palmela (Portugal) . ( GmbH ), in which Ford and VW each held half.

Sharan / Alhambra and Galaxy combine the design and technology worlds of two automotive groups in one vehicle. The design was also a compromise solution, on the one hand it was reminiscent of the Ford Mondeo I , but had typical VW door handles and a rear section based on the VW Passat B4 .

In 1998 the Sharan received a small facelift for the first time. These models can be recognized by the more modern mirrors adopted from the Golf IV and a new dash panel in the interior that is no longer from Ford.

Only after the first revision in May 2000 (Seat Alhambra in July 2000) did the exterior and interior design of the Sharan adapt to the VW Golf and Passat and, in the Alhambra, to that of the Seat Leon and Toledo , at the same time to the New, which has now dominated Ford -Edge design . In the Sharan / Galaxy models, you can see that many components come from VW development, as the common parts strategy means that many components are also used in other VW models. VW also contributed the TDI - and VR6 - engines at. The side indicator in the fender of the Sharan / Galaxy / Alhambra, which comes from VW and was already present in the last Golf III models, can be found in the same form in part on the Ford Fusion , Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus .

At the end of 2004 a further facelift was carried out (only for the VW Sharan), which could be recognized by the changed taillights, side indicators in the mirror and chrome surrounds on the radiator grille.

In October 2005, the Seat Alhambra was followed by another minor revision, which (also for VW Sharan) included a new 2.0-liter diesel engine with a particulate filter. This variant can be recognized visually by the central positioning of the “Alhambra” logo on the tailgate.

The VW Sharan and Ford Galaxy models were presented to the public at the 1995 IAA and were produced from May 1995 (Ford Galaxy) and September 1995, and from March 1996 the Seat Alhambra. Colloquially, the three models are often referred to as SGA .

In December 1999, Ford sold its AutoEuropa shares to VW after the decision was made to build the successor to the Galaxy in the increasingly powerful van segment on its own in order to better utilize its own factories and to differentiate itself from the competition. The partners had not previously been able to agree on the size of a successor model.

The cooperation between the VW Group and Ford was terminated at the beginning of 2006, and the last Galaxy rolled off the assembly line at AutoEurope. The second generation, introduced in May 2006, was developed by Ford alone.

The successor VW Sharan II went on sale in September 2010. The new model was presented at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2010.

The Sharan was also the last VW model with the classic model variant designation “CL”, “GL” or “Carat”.

Vehicle concept

There is a choice of gasoline engines with an output of 85 to 150  kW or diesel engines with 66 to 110 kW available for the Sharan .

Like most MPVs, the Sharan has a variable interior. Of the up to seven seats, the five in the back can be regrouped or removed entirely in a few simple steps, creating a flat cargo space of around 2 m in length. These seats can be converted into tables by folding the backrest. Integrated child / baby seats are also available for a surcharge or in the "Family" version. This gives you a booster seat for toddlers by lifting the seat, and the fold-out baby seat with five-point belt is located in the backrest. However, both seat variants were only rated “sufficient” by the ADAC.

The Sharan was also offered by Volkswagen as a city delivery van: This model had a driver and front passenger seat, behind which a partition grille was attached. The window panes behind the A-pillar were covered with foil in the color of the car. The engine range extended up to the VR6 . Optionally, the Sharan city delivery van could also be registered as a commercial vehicle, with the mounting holes for the rear seat belts then being sealed with shear bolts.

A point of criticism that is frequently expressed concerns the conceptual relationship to the Golf and Passat , which can be attributed to the short development time available. It is held responsible for the heavy wear and tear on parts of the front wheel suspension, especially the coupling rods. In the first series, the plastics used in the interior (e.g. sun visors, seat panels, door and luggage compartment panels) were not very durable.

The three models Sharan, Galaxy and Alhambra differ only slightly. The most noticeable deviations are the optically different headlights, radiator grilles and taillights as well as details in the dashboard and seat covers. There are also differences in one of the gasoline engines offered as well as the standard and additional equipment that varies between the equipment lines.

The three models received a lot of attention in the automotive industry because they showed the value of the brands . With the same equipment, the Sharan was around 1000 to 2500 euros more expensive than the Galaxy and the Alhambra, which were identical at the time, but mostly sold better in Germany (unlike in the rest of Europe ). Obviously, the German buyers were prepared to pay considerable additional prices for the Volkswagen brand alone. In Great Britain it was the other way around, where the Ford brand enjoys a better reputation than VW.

Gas version

From 2006 the Sharan was also available ex works with an LPG gas system in conjunction with the 2.0-liter gasoline engine and can be driven with either gas or petrol.
