The first generation was a joint development with Volkswagen and Seat and was produced together with the VW Sharan from June 1995 in Palmela (Portugal). Founded in 1991 company Autoeuropa Automóveis , Lda ( GmbH ) was a joint venture by the end of 1998 divided equally owned by VW and Ford. The production of the Seat Alhambra began in mid 1996. The three vehicles are therefore also called SGA called model .
The Galaxy combined the technology and design worlds of the two automotive groups. After Ford and VW had disagreements about the size of a joint new model, Ford sold its Autoeuropa shares to VW in 1998 and developed a new model independently.
In April 2000 the Galaxy was modified (Galaxy '00). Its exterior has been matched to the other models in the Ford range in the style of the New Edge design. The engines have also been revised and the engine performance increased.
The Galaxy continued to be produced on behalf of Ford at VW Autoeuropa in Palmela until May 2006 , while the Sharan received a second facelift in late autumn 2004 and was not replaced until September 2010.

In May 2006, the new model developed by Ford appeared, which was built at the Belgian Ford plant in Genk . At the same time, the slightly smaller and only five-seater (seven-seater as an option) Ford S-MAX , which was also manufactured in Belgium, was introduced on the same platform . The Galaxy, together with the S-MAX, is the first model to have the Kinetic Design that will shape Ford faces for the next few years and that was first used in the Ford Iosis study . The new model is around 18 cm longer than the previous model.
Stars in the Euro NCAP - Crash Test (2006) |
In the petrol engine, the 2.0-liter engine was equipped with a manual five-speed gearbox in both the normal and the flexifuel variant. The 2.3-liter engine, on the other hand, is only available with the six-speed automatic transmission known as Durashift-6-tronic . The Galaxy equipped with a diesel were all delivered from the factory with a manual 6-speed gearbox. However, the Durashift-6-tronic was available for the 103 kW variant at an additional cost. With the exception of the 1.6 TDCi and 1.8 TDCi, all engines have 4 valves per cylinder.
The 1.8-liter diesel was delivered with a manual five-speed gearbox and was also the only two-valve engine in the Galaxy. The 96 kW variant of the 2.0 liter engine was initially delivered with a manual six-speed gearbox and, on request, with the Durashift 6 tronic. Later this engine was only offered with the automatic transmission until the end of its availability.
All engines used in the Galaxy comply with the Euro 4 emissions standard, and Euro 5 from the 2010 facelift. Apart from the 1.8-liter variant, all diesels are equipped with a particle filter as standard. All of the engines described were available on the German market. A 92 kW (125 PS) version of the 1.8-liter diesel engine was also offered in other markets.
The Galaxy (WA6) has a third row of seats at the rear as standard, which can be completely sunk into the floor together with the middle row. All seats can be moved individually and have height-adjustable headrests and three-point belts. A novelty in the Galaxy (WA6) was the surcharge, panoramic glass roof reaching far to the rear with a longitudinal center bar with integrated shelves.
Since 2008, the Galaxy has been available in a titanium version in addition to the well-known Trend and Ghia equipment variants. From this point in time, the previous Ambiente equipment variant was no longer available on the German market. In 2009 there was the special model Concept, which ranked below the trend.
Facelift
In May 2010, the second generation received a facelift (Galaxy '10). Outside there were only minor changes, so the vehicle received a slightly modified bonnet and a new silver-colored roof rails, and the taillights were converted to LED technology. Options now include a lane change assistant , the Ford Key Free System and the Ford Power Start function (keyless unlocking, locking and starting), a new premium sound system with subwoofer and a rear view camera. The Galaxy continued to be offered in the Trend, Ghia and Titanium equipment lines.
The engine range has been completely revised and now fully complies with the Euro 5 emissions standard . The consumption values have been significantly reduced. Together with the S-Max, the Galaxy was the first Ford model to feature the 2.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine with turbocharging. The previous automatic converter was taken out of the range and replaced by the PowerShift automatic transmission with dual clutch technology. The 2.2-liter diesel engine introduced in 2008 was now available again after an interruption.
Production ended in December 2014.

useful information
Ford brought an automobile onto the market in the USA under the name Ford Galaxie in the 1960s , which occasionally leads to name confusion.
