The first generation of this off-road vehicle appeared in March 1993 and was identical to the Nissan Terrano II produced by Nissan ( Nissan Motor Ibérica ) in Barcelona, Spain . The Maverick differed only in the brand emblems ( badge engineering ). It was optionally available as a three- or five-door model and with four-cylinder engines with a displacement of 2.4 liters (petrol) or 2.7 liters (diesel). In October 1996, the Maverick was given a slight facelift, which could be recognized by the round double headlights and the chrome grille. The 2.7-liter turbodiesel got a charge air cooler and an electronic engine control system to be able to comply with the new exhaust gas limits. The output has now increased from 73 kW to 92 kW. While the Nissan Terrano II was thoroughly revised in spring 2000, production of the Ford Maverick ended in March 1998.

After a break of more than two years, the second generation of the SUV came onto the European market in October 2000, which was identical to the Mazda Tribute and Mercury Mariner . The vehicle was first offered in the USA and marketed under the name Ford Escape with small changes to the European version. In August 2004 the Maverick received a facelift , the vehicle grew in length and height. In the same year, the production of the Escape Hybrid began , but it was intended exclusively for the North American market and was not offered in Europe. The Maverick was withdrawn from the model range in June 2007. The Ford Kuga introduced in spring 2008 can be seen as a comparable successor .
