Ford Ranger is a pickup truck produced by the US company Ford Motor Company . The models for the North American market and the world market are technically similar, but not identical. The vehicle is also sold internationally as the Mazda BT-50 under the Mazda brand and as the Mazda B-Series in North America . Since 2003, the vehicle has also been offered in Vietnam and South Africa as a station wagon version Ford New Everest and as a Ford Endeavor in India .

North America

The American Ranger was initially built from January 1982 to December 2011. Between 2012 and 2017, Ford stopped selling a small pickup in North America and referred interested parties to the larger F-150 . At the North American International Auto Show in January 2018, Ford presented a new Ranger for the US market. This is based on the international version and is to be built in Wayne from autumn 2018 .

In North America, the Ranger was Ford's entry-level model in the pickup segment. The name Ranger was first used from 1967, at that time for the high-quality equipment variant of the F-series . This was retained until the end of 1981, after which the Ranger became an independent model and replaced the Ford Courier in spring 1982 .

The first model was optically based on the larger pickups from Ford and was initially offered with a 2-liter (53 kW / 72 PS) and a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine (63 kW / 86 PS).

  • At the beginning of 1989 the first major facelift took place, whether this facelift can be counted as a separate generation is controversial. The 2.3 liter engine was equipped with two spark plugs per cylinder and now had an additional 10 kW. In 1990 a 4-liter engine with 118 kW (160 hp) was introduced.
  • In the spring of 1993, the Ranger was completely redesigned and given a more aerodynamic body. The previously available 2.9-liter engine was replaced by a 3-liter V6. In 1995 it received a new dashboard, which enabled the installation of a passenger airbag, which was first offered in 1996.
  • At the beginning of 1998 the Ranger was completely redesigned and received a larger passenger compartment, made possible by an extended wheelbase.
  • In the summer of 2001 the Ranger received modified bumpers, headlights and a modified grille. Further revisions of this type followed in late 2003 and early 2006.

International

This model is based on the current Mazda pickup, i.e. on the Mazda B-series until 2006 , since then on the Mazda BT-50 and is sold with different body designs and engine configurations depending on the market.

Ranger (2006-2012)

A new model was presented at the end of 2006 and was offered in Germany in three cabin configurations, as a single, extended single and double cabin. Depending on the size of the cabin, the loading area was 2.28, 1.75 or 1.53 meters long. The drive units were two diesels, a 2.5-liter engine with 105 kW (143 hp) and a 3.0-liter engine with 115 kW (156 hp). A facelift followed in autumn 2009.

In November 2010, around 140 Ford Rangers with automatic transmissions, which were built in Thailand between May 15, 2007 and July 25, 2008, were recalled in Germany. There was a possibility that the vehicles rolled away when parking on sloping terrain.

Depending on the size of the cabin, the loading area is now 2.32; 1.85 or 1.56 meters long. A 2.2-liter in-line four-cylinder diesel, optionally with 92 kW (125 PS) and 320 Nm at 1500 rpm or with 110 kW (150 PS) and 375 Nm at 1500 rpm, as well as a 3.2-liter in-line five-cylinder -Diesel with 147 kW (200 PS) and 470 Nm at 1500 rpm were the engines offered. A 6-speed manual transmission was standard, and a six- speed automatic transmission was also available for the two more powerful engines . The power transmission was carried out as standard on the rear axle, but a manually switchable all-wheel drive is standard. The Ranger was offered in the equipment variants XL, XLT, Limited and Wildtrak.

This generation of the Ford Ranger has extensive safety equipment. In addition to the anti-lock braking system (ABS) and vehicle dynamics control (ESP), hill descent control, hill start assist, trailer stabilization, safety brake assist, emergency brake lights, rollover protection and a traction control system are standard. In addition, the vehicles for the German market are equipped with seven airbags ex works.
