The Ford Tempo was a mid-range model produced by the US car manufacturer Ford from mid-1983 to spring 1994 and the successor to the Ford Fairmont . Mercury's identical sister model was the Topaz .
Model history
In May 1983 Ford presented the Tempo, which was technically related to the US Escort but had a longer wheelbase (253 instead of 239 cm) as a two-door coupé and four-door sedan , each with a notchback . In terms of style, the Tempo was based very much on the design language of the Ford Sierra, which appeared a year earlier .
The equipment levels L, GL and GLX were available. The models initially had an 85 PS (62.5 kW) 2.3-liter four-cylinder with carburettor , from 1984 either an 87 PS (64 kW) or 101 PS (74 kW) 2.3-liter four-cylinder Manifold injection or a Mazda 2-liter diesel engine with 53 HP (39 kW).
In autumn 1985 the front and rear facelifted, recognizable by the flush headlights, at the same time the Tempo L was discontinued. In 1987 an all-wheel drive version called Tempo AWD was introduced and the diesel engine was no longer available . At the same time the production of the sedan was stopped.
In 1988 the Tempo was visually revised again and received a modified radiator grille and, in the case of the sedan, a new roof with three side windows. The GLX has been renamed GLS.
From 1992, a three-liter V6 with 142 hp (104 kW) was available at Tempo, while the all-wheel drive version was deleted at the same time. In 1993 the range was further thinned out, there was only the two- and four-door GL and the four-door LX.
By the end of production in the spring of 1994, Ford had made 2,816,721 copies of the Tempo. It was replaced by the Ford Contour .
