The Ford Windstar was an American van from Ford based on the Ford Taurus . It was built from the beginning of 1995 to spring 2003, with Ford officially selling it in Germany from mid-1998. Its predecessor is the Ford Aerostar , the successor to the Ford Freestar .
history
Two model generations of the vehicle were produced. The first was produced from January 1995 to February 1999 and was also officially sold in Germany. The vehicle was available with a 3.0 liter Vulcan V6 and 108 kW (147 hp) or a 3.8 liter Essex V6 engine and 149 kW (203 hp). The latter was only offered in the USA.
At the end of 1997 the Windstar received a small facelift with a modified grill and headlights.
In March 1999 the second version appeared, in which both the exterior and interior had been revised. All versions were equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission. The second generation was also officially marketed in a version specially tailored to German conditions. The vehicle was optionally available with a four-year guarantee.
With the usually very steadfast 3.0-liter engine, however, there was a problem: The camshaft position sensor, which also drove the oil pump, sometimes failed prematurely due to worn-off gears, which often led to serious engine damage.
Production of the Windstar was phased out in April 2003.
End of production
In Germany, the vehicle was only sold in small numbers from mid-1998 to spring 2002 and was considered a larger-sized alternative to the Ford Galaxy . In contrast to this, the Windstar was provided with a sliding door on the side. The success was limited, however, as it did not meet European standards in terms of design and interior quality.
In autumn 2003 the Windstar was replaced by the Ford Freestar in America . The model was built in Oakville (Ontario) in Canada .
