The Ford Cougar (English name for Puma ) is a by Mercury commissioned and Ford in Cologne and Dunton ( England on the basis of the US) Ford Contour developed sports coupe . It was manufactured between spring 1998 and summer 2002.

Model history

Rear view

Ford USA first used the model name Cougar in the early 1960s to designate a concept vehicle for the Ford Thunderbird.

The coupé was manufactured from spring 1998 in the joint venture AAI ( Auto Alliance International , a joint venture between Ford and Mazda ) in Flat Rock , Michigan (USA).

It was officially launched in the United States as the Mercury Cougar on May 7, 1998. In Europe , however, the Cougar was sold under the Ford label from autumn 1998 due to the lack of infrastructure from Mercury . There were only minor differences to the US version, such as: B. grille, front and rear lights, chassis and brakes.

There were two engines with four-valve technology on offer. A Zetec - rows -Vierzylinder- and a Duratec - V six-cylinder, which with only minor modifications also in the Mercury Mystique , Ford Contour , Mondeo and Jaguar X-type was used. Furthermore, the Cougar was offered either with a fully synchronized ( MTX 75 ) five-speed manual gearbox or optionally with the V6 with a ( CD4E ) four-speed automatic with electronic control.

After more than 230,000 vehicles were produced, the last copy rolled off the production line on August 30, 2002.

According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority , 2,935 Ford Cougars were still registered in Germany as of January 1, 2019 (excluding shutdowns and temporary deregistrations).

Cougar ST200

In 1999 the press was presented with a more powerful, sportier version of the Cougar ST200.

A few pre-series models were produced that were used at trade fairs, press meetings and photo shoots. All preparations for a market launch including the advertising campaigns, information to insurers and spare parts manufacturers up to the display of the brochures at the authorized dealers were made; However, sales were literally stopped at the last second for market analysis reasons and the Cougar ST200 was never delivered.

According to official information, the pre-production models were all destroyed. Only three existing copies are documented. Vehicles that are commonly used on the roads as the "Cougar ST200" are therefore largely private conversions by installing the Mondeo ST200 engine in a Cougar body.
