Ford Duratec

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Duratec is the name of several four-stroke - gasoline engines of the car manufacturer Ford . Originally it was only V6 engines that were introduced in 1994 with the Ford Mondeo . For marketing reasons, however, Ford gradually began to sell all gasoline engines in its models across Europe under the name Duratec.

Duratec 24V

These six-cylinder engines, which have four-valve technology, i.e. two intake and two exhaust valves , were the first to bear the name Duratec. The units built as a V-engine were first presented in 1994 for the new Mondeo. With the introduction of the Mondeo top model ST220 , the engine was also available with a three-liter displacement. With the introduction of the fourth generation of the Ford Mondeo in 2007, production of the Duratec 24V engine was discontinued.

Duratec-HE

The new Duratec was first introduced with the new Ford Mondeo in autumn 2000 and since the second model generation of the Ford Focus , the Zetec-E engines have been replaced by the more modern Duratec-HE. HE is an abbreviation for homogenous engine and freely translated means world engine.

At that time, Ford was the main shareholder in Mazda and the engine known as the L engine by the Japanese car manufacturer was taken over almost unchanged. The Duratec-HE is a four-cylinder in- line engine with an aluminum engine block and cylinder head with two overhead camshafts and four valves per cylinder. The valve drive takes place via a timing chain , the ancillary units are driven via a ribbed belt. In contrast to the Zetec-E, the Duratec-HE has the inlet side at the front of the engine when viewed in the direction of travel. For the European market the engine was available with a displacement of 1.8 to 2.3 liters, in America the engine was also available with a displacement of 2.5 liters.

The 1.8-liter engine was also offered ex works as a flexi-fuel variant in the Focus and Mondeo. These engines can be operated with standard gasoline as well as with ethanol fuel (E85) . This engine was later replaced by the 2.0 liter that was available in the Mondeo , S-Max and Galaxy . The engine and the engine control are specially designed for operation with ethanol, any mixture ratio between gasoline and ethanol is possible. Only one fuel tank is used, the mixing ratio is determined by sensors. Since then the 1.6 liter TI-VCT engine has been used as a flexifuel for the Focus . The last Duratec HE were available in the Galaxy until the end of 2014 and were taken out of the range shortly before the van model change.

Another variant of the engine with a displacement of 1.8 liters was equipped with direct petrol injection . The "Duratec SCi" -Einspritzsystem (developed S mart C harge I njection) in close cooperation with the Robert Bosch GmbH . The central element is a single-cylinder high-pressure injection pump (HDP2) with flow control, which is driven by the intake camshaft and injects the fuel directly into the combustion chamber. This engine was only used in the Ford Mondeo.

With the introduction of EcoBoost technology, the engines were further developed and have only been available with turbocharging and direct injection since the beginning of 2015.

Further use

  • A Duratec HE modified by Cosworth with a displacement of 2.3 liters and 213 kW (290 hp) was used in the BAC Mono of the British car manufacturer Briggs Automotive Company until 2015 .
  • A Duratec-HE with a displacement of 1.8 liters and 103 kW (140 PS) is used in the Ginetta G40 small series vehicle .
  • The Duratec-HE was used by various tuning companies to easily and inexpensively increase the performance of the Lotus Elise of the first series. For this purpose, engines with a displacement of 2.0 and 2.3 liters were used almost exclusively.

Duratec 20V

Similar to the Duratec-HE, this 2.5-liter in-line five-cylinder does not come from the development of Ford, but was taken over from ongoing production by Volvo . In order to obtain powerful, durable and reasonably compact engines and to save development costs, the tried and tested engines from Volvo were used. Initially, these were only used in the second generation ST model of the Ford Focus with 166 kW (225 PS), later the engine with 147 kW (200 PS) or 162 kW (220 PS) was also used in the Ford Mondeo, Ford S. -MAX and offered in the Ford Kuga . After the facelift of the second Focus model generation, the engine output for the new Focus RS was increased to 224 kW (305 hp), and in the limited special edition Focus RS500 even to 257 kW (350 hp).

Since the introduction of the EcoBoost engines, the in-line five-cylinder engines are no longer available in Ford models.

Zetec-E

The Zetec E motors were completely replaced by the new Duratec HE motors in 2004 with the introduction of the new Ford Focus. However, the name Duratec was already introduced in the first Focus model series, the 2.0-liter turbo engine of the Focus RS was already known as the Duratec RS , the 2.0-liter naturally aspirated engine of the Focus ST170 as the Duratec ST . Both engines are revised versions of the Zetec-E.

Zetec-SE

From 2002 the Zetec-SE motors were sold exclusively under the name Duratec , but the technology did not change. As of 2004, the engine in the Ford Focus was also double camshaft adjustment Ti-VCT ( t win i ndependent v ariable c amshaft t available IMing).

Some of the new EcoBoost motors are based on the technology of the Zetec-SE. However, while the Duratec-HE is no longer available, the Zetec-SE will continue to be produced.

Duratec 8V

Under the name Duratec 8V , Ford sold the Zetec-Rocam developed by Ford Brazil in 2000 as a more cost-effective version of the Zetec-SE . The engine was available from 2003 to 2008 in the Ka and Fiesta , as well as in the Ford Streetka .

The four-cylinder engine from Fiat , which is installed in the second generation of Ford Ka models, is also sold under the name Duratec.
