The Ford C-MAX , formerly the Ford Focus C-MAX , is a passenger car model from the automobile manufacturer Ford . It is a compact van that was manufactured in the Ford factory in Saarlouis from May 2003 . In March 2004, TÜV Rheinland was the first vehicle in the world to receive the confirmation that the allergy risk has been reduced to a minimum for all materials in its interior, when it was awarded the allergy tested interior seal . In April 2007 there was an optical and technical revision and the renaming to Ford C-MAX.

The second generation of the C-MAX came onto the market in Germany in December 2010. This is now also available in a longer version called the Ford Grand C-MAX . The second generation of models was initially produced exclusively at the Spanish plant in Almussafes near Valencia . Since September 2014, the C-Max has been manufactured exclusively in Saarlouis again, due to the closure of the plant and the relocation of production. In June 2019 the C-MAX and the Grand C-MAX were discontinued without replacement.

The C-MAX (code: C214) was based on the floor pan of the second model generation of the Ford Focus , but came onto the market before this. In contrast to many competitors, the vehicle did not offer a third row of seats with emergency seats, but instead a flexible rear row of seats with the "Comfort" seating system (not in the basic version Ambiente ): After the seat surface and backrest of the middle seat were folded back and the parcel shelf partially folded away was, the legroom of the outer rear seats could be significantly increased by moving diagonally inwards / backwards. The resulting slightly higher interior noise level was disadvantageous , as the resonance volume was increased due to the cargo hold being partially open to the inside. It also reduced the cargo space.

A special feature was the large "Premium" center console (standard with Ghia equipment) with the EPB (Electronic Park Brake) installed until the model update in spring 2007.

safety

The C-Max had extensive safety equipment as standard: In addition to the usual ABS and seat belt tensioners , it had an ESP with ASR and 6 airbags (driver / front passenger, two side airbags and head-shoulder airbags at the front and rear). In the Euro NCAP crash test in November 2003, it was the first car to receive 4 stars in the assessment of child safety in the vehicle. That also corresponded to the overall result.

Facelift

In April 2007, the car, known only as C-MAX without the addition of Focus , received a facelift.

The front was to continue the "Kinetic Design" of the other Ford models: New vertically arranged fog lights , larger grille with a horizontal chrome strip and other headlights. In addition, Ford had equipped the new C-MAX with LED taillights, which gave the car a futuristic look in the dark. The interior has been upgraded with silver applications in a “brushed chrome” look and a new center console called “Premium”; Furthermore, the lighting of the instruments has been changed from green, which was typical for Ford up to now, to red.

From February 2008 the C-MAX was available ex works with an LPG system ; The basis was the 2.0-liter gasoline engine with 107 kW. The luggage compartment floor was increased by around ten centimeters thanks to the additional trough tank with a capacity of 42.5 liters. More than 400 kilometers could be reached in gas operation. Together with the 55 liter petrol tank, the car had a range of over 1,100 kilometers.

At the IAA in September 2009 Ford presented the second model generation of the C-MAX.

It was launched on December 4th 2010 in Germany. In addition to the usual C-MAX, there was now also an extended version called the Grand C-MAX . This has two rear sliding doors and, at an additional cost, a third row of seats, which consists of two individual seats.

The second C-MAX is based on the third generation of the Ford Focus floor pan, but was introduced before it. It was similar with the first series of the C-MAX. As in other Ford models, the new EcoBoost engines, petrol direct injection with low pressure turbocharging and two variably controlled overhead camshafts were also available in the C-MAX . The EcoBoost and some diesel variants are equipped with a 6-speed gearbox and an automatic start-stop system.

Ford also planned to offer the C-MAX as a full hybrid and a plug-in hybrid.

Facelift

In April 2015, the C-MAX and Grand C-MAX underwent a facelift, which was available since June of the same year.

As with the Focus, you can see the facelift of the two vans except for the adjusted front and especially the modified cockpit. Half of all buttons and controls have been removed from the center console, which is now taken over by a large touchscreen that can also be controlled with voice commands.

For example, the automatic emergency brake now works up to 50 km / h instead of 30 km / h. In addition, there was an extended parking assistance system, which now also controls gaps across the lane, independently maneuvers the car back onto the road and even monitors cross traffic.

The engines were prepared for the Euro 6 standard. The 1.6-liter gasoline engines, which were replaced by new turbo direct injection engines with 1.5-liter displacement, were eliminated, which should reduce consumption by up to 20 percent. There was a choice of five petrol and five diesel engines as well as a liquefied gas conversion, with which the C-Max covered a power range from 95 hp to 182 hp.

safety

The C-MAX and Grand C-MAX have standard safety equipment, which includes the following: front and side airbags for driver and front passenger, head and shoulder airbags for driver and front passenger and the two outer seats in the second row of seats, Three-point belts with belt tensioners and force limiters for all seats, anti-lock braking system with electronic brake force distribution, safety brake assistant, ESP with traction control and traction control including torque vectoring control. This is a system that delivers more torque to the front wheel on the outside of the bend when braking in bends, thus increasing driving stability. There are also safety seats that prevent slipping under the seat belt, an emergency brake light that flashes in the event of an emergency braking and a steering column that collapses in the event of a frontal collision to prevent leg injuries.

Various assistance systems were available for a surcharge, including a drowsiness warning that measures the distance to the vehicle in front, a lane assistant, a traffic sign recognition system, a parking assistant and a blind spot assistant that uses radar sensors to detect whether another vehicle is in the blind spot to warn the driver via a warning light in the exterior mirror.

In the Euro NCAP crash test, both the C-MAX and the Grand C-MAX received the top rating of 5 stars.

Equipment variants

C-MAX and Grand C-MAX were available in Germany in three equipment variants.

  • In addition to the safety equipment already mentioned, the basic version Ambiente has electric windows at the front (Grand C-MAX also at the rear), electrically adjustable exterior mirrors with integrated flashing lights and an MP3- compatible CD audio system.
  • As a trend , the car also has a manual air conditioning system, power windows at the rear with total locking function, heated exterior mirrors, a chrome-plated radiator grille and a height-adjustable driver's seat with adjustable lumbar support.
  • The top model Titanium is also equipped as standard with fog lights, a headlight assistant with day and night sensor, automatic temperature control for the air conditioning, a hill start assistant, a cruise control system, rain sensor and a power button for starting and stopping the engine. The passenger seat is also height-adjustable with adjustable lumbar support, the radiator grille and side windows are decorated with chrome strips, the gear knob and steering wheel are made of leather and the light-alloy wheels are fitted with a tire pressure monitoring system.

Engines

All engines meet the Euro 5 emissions standard, the diesel engines are equipped with a diesel particulate filter.

At the Detroit Motor Show 2011, Ford presented a plug-in hybrid model of the C-MAX, which was the first plug-in hybrid in the company's history to be available in North America in 2012 and in Europe in 2013. The range with fully charged batteries should be over 800 km, the fuel consumption should be below that of the Ford Fusion Hybrid , which consumes 5.7 liters per 100 km.

The car has a lithium-ion battery developed by Ford with a capacity of 7.6 kWh, and the vehicle interior temperature can also be specifically controlled during the charging process, even via an app on a smartphone if desired .

The C-Max Energi has the same information system as the electric version of the Ford Focus. It informs the driver about the charge level, the remaining range and the consumption of the batteries. The so-called “brake coach” also tells him how to brake most efficiently in order to recover as much energy as possible to recharge the batteries.

In addition to a 2.0-liter gasoline engine that works according to the Atkinson cycle and has an output of 105 kW (143 hp), the vehicle has an electric motor with 88 kW (120 hp), which provides a maximum torque of 240 Nm . The maximum speed in electric mode is 136 km / h.
