The Ford Landau was an upper middle class passenger car that Ford do Brasil presented at the São Paulo Auto Show in 1970 and built in its São Paulo factory from 1971 to 1983 . This car became Ford's top model in Brazil . It was based on the galaxy . In 1976 it differed more significantly from Galaxie and LTD and got a new, lighter 4.9-liter V8 engine. A major facelift made it look similar to the 1965 Lincoln Continental .
American roots, but Brazilian style
The Landau stood in the shop windows of car dealerships together with the US models Galaxie 500 and LTD 1976 as Ford's new top model. All three models had the new V8 engine with 4942 cc and an output of 198 bhp (146 kW), which replaced the old V8 with 4.8 liter displacement, but the Galaxie and the LTD retained the design elements from the US Originals. Initially, the Landau was only available in one paint color (“Prata Continental”, German: continental silver), an exclusive metallic color. The vinyl roof was also kept in silver.
Alcohol motors
On June 25, 1979, in the midst of the oil crisis in Brazil, Ford offered a 4.9-liter engine with increased compression (11.0: 1 instead of 7.8: 1) for the Galaxie and Landau. This had double exhaust pipes, an aluminum intake manifold and a nickel-plated carburetor so that it could also be operated with ethanol . The first car went to the then Brazilian President, João Figueiredo .
Of a total of 77,647 galaxies that were built in Brazil in 16 years, 2,492 were equipped for alcohol operation.
