The Ford Crown Victoria is a car model from the US car manufacturer Ford , which was offered on the North American market in the so-called full-size category from the beginning of 1992 to summer 2011 . In contrast to its main competitor, the Chevrolet Impala , which was mainly sold in North America, the Crown Victoria was also offered in various markets such as the Middle East.
Crown Victoria is a traditional Ford model name, the origins of which go back to the 1950s. Since 1996, Crown Victoria vehicles have also been available in the Middle East.
In Canada , from 2000, the model was only available as a fleet and police vehicle and only used for private individuals. In the USA, too, the Crown Victoria has not been sold to private individuals since the end of 2007.
Model history
The versions from 1982 to 1991 (officially called LTD Crown Victoria ) were the continuation of the Ford LTD introduced in 1978 ; Since 1980 the LTD top model has been nicknamed Crown Victoria, the name was then extended to the entire model range in order to differentiate it from the new, smaller LTD, a sedan based on the Ford Fairmont .
After General Motors ceased production of its full-size models Chevrolet Caprice , Buick Roadmaster and others in 1996 due to falling sales and the increased demand for vans and trucks (pickups and SUVs) in the USA, the so-called Crown Vic and the parallel model Mercury remained Grand Marquis as the last US full-size models based on the classic American model (rear-wheel drive, rigid rear axle , space for 6 people) that were not sold under premium brands ( Cadillac , Lincoln ). This was also reflected in the relatively low base price of 25,445 US dollars (March 2007).

In 1991 the Crown Victoria (the designation "LTD" was dropped) for the 1992 model year was presented. This is built on a box frame. In order to be able to guarantee short downtimes after collisions or major repairs, it was designed in such a way that the entire front structure, including engine and axle, can be replaced in a short time. Accordingly, the fenders are bolted instead of welded. The trunk volume is limited, due to the design, by the rear axle and the fuel tank. The standard electronic locking of the ignition after a collision is used for safety. If the vehicle then proves to be ready to drive, the system can be deactivated using a corresponding switch in the trunk.
Only one engine variant was available. It originally developed 202 PS (150.6 kW), with an optional double exhaust system 212 PS (158.1 kW). Corresponding to its main purpose, the Crown Victoria was designed as a real six-seater and therefore equipped with a bench at the front (in the upscale models it is divided into two parts, electrically adjustable and with a folding central armrest). This resulted in the operation of the standard three-stage automatic via steering wheel gear.
The Crown Victoria was designed much more aerodynamically than its predecessor LTD with optical borrowings from the popular Ford Taurus . It was given a similar roof with four side windows and, instead of a radiator grille, a narrow air inlet between the hood and bumper. The body design was not well received. Although most of the production went to fleet customers (police, fire brigade and other authorities, but above all taxi companies), the vehicle was also available to private customers for a long time. There were different versions. The top version was called the Touring Sedan in the first model year , followed by the LX . As standard, it comprised the 212 hp engine, wider tires on aluminum rims, air suspension for the rear axle, leather upholstery, windscreen heating, plastic parts in a different color from the body, Ford's exclusive access system with a numeric code for the driver's door and many other comfort features. Instead of the air conditioning, an automatic climate control was also available. Initially, there was only an airbag on the driver's side.
A slight facelift followed in 1993 to respond to criticism of the design. It comprised a narrow plastic radiator grille between the headlights, which emphasized the then current design line of the Ford models.
In 1995, the satin chrome trim strip below the trunk lid was supplemented by a red reflective strip on the lower edge. The rear light units were made larger and guided on both sides with a gentle swing to the recess for the license plate, whereby the inner part was only reflected but not illuminated.

In autumn 1997 a new generation of the Crown Victoria was introduced. It was based much more on the parallel model Mercury Grand Marquis . The front section with an indicated radiator grille was taken over from this, as was the roof with a wider C-pillar . A version with a longer wheelbase was released in 2002 only for taxi companies and only in the USA. In mid-2003 this generation of models underwent a facelift.
The model was still offered to the police, fire brigade and taxi companies until August 2011 and in a civilian rental car version after the Mercury Grand Marquis was discontinued.
Vehicle data
In the last generation of models, the Crown Victoria has a wheelbase of 2.91 m and a total length of 5.38 m, which means that its dimensions are larger than all series-produced models from German manufacturers (with the exception of the Maybach 57 and 62 ). The Crown Victoria is powered by a 4.6 liter eight-cylinder gasoline engine, which, depending on the model variant, develops between 224 and 239 hp (167 and 178 kW).
The consumption of the civil models was indicated by Ford between 25 and 17 miles per gallon , which corresponds to 9.4 to 13.8 liters per 100 km.
Authority version
For police authorities, Ford produced a model called the Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor (CVPI, P71, P7B for short). The Ford Crown Victoria became the most widely used police vehicle by US security agencies and Canadian authorities. Two model lines were produced from 1992 to 2011.
End of production in North America
With the closure of the plant in St. Thomas (Ontario) on Lake Erie on August 31, 2011, production of the Panther platform in North America was discontinued. There is no direct successor to the Crown Victoria. The next smaller model, the Ford Taurus , has since become the largest sedan in the North American Ford model range.
For the American police as well as for taxi companies, where the Crown Victoria was very popular, special versions with higher performance were made. In New York, the Crown Victoria in the taxi version dominated the cityscape of the metropolis for a long time with a share of around 90 percent as the last full-size model. Since the end of 2013, a taxi version of the Nissan NV200 has replaced the Crown Victoria.

Reliability and maintenance
The main arguments why the Crown Victoria is still so popular with the police and taxi companies are its above-average reliability and low maintenance costs. Despite recently miserable sales figures in the private sector, the Crown Victoria regularly received awards as “Best Used Car Bet” from various specialist publications such as Edmunds.com and Consumer Reports .
