The first generation of the Transit / Tourneo Connect was designed by the designer Peter Horbury and presented for the first time in autumn 2001. The model replaced the Ford Courier delivery van based on the Ford Fiesta '96 and the Ford Escort Express delivery van, both of which were discontinued in the same year.

The model was available in two versions, a short wheelbase with a flat roof and a long wheelbase with a high roof. In the long version it offers such. B. also the Fiat Doblò Cargo Maxi or the Renault Kangoo Rapid space for two Euro pallets . The Connect was developed with the 2.0L four-cylinder gasoline engine with 85 kW (115 PS) and the 1.8L common rail injection diesel engine with 5-speed manual gearbox and two power variants 55 kW (75 PS) and 66 kW (90 PS) offered.

From the beginning of 2002 it was built by Ford- Otosan in Turkey and since mid-2009 also at the Ford plant in Craiova in Romania .

At the start of sales, the Tourneo Connect was the only one in its class that offered a 60:40 split and completely removable rear seat that could be lowered into the floor. This enables different seating and loading options. The two sliding side doors are optional, customers could choose between tailgate and rear wing doors.

The Transit Connect was voted Van of the Year in 2004.

Facelift

In October 2006, the Transit Connect was slightly revised for the first time.

Another modified Transit Connect was presented at the Chicago Auto Show in spring 2009. From then on, the model was also offered in North America and in 2010 it received the North American Truck of the Year award at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS).

In North America, the Connect was only offered as a long version of the delivery van with the 2.0L four-cylinder petrol engine with a 4- speed automatic transmission . In Europe there was the 1.8L common rail injection diesel engine with 5-speed manual transmission and two power variants 55 kW and 66 kW. From 2011, the Transit Connect XLT Premium Wagon was offered in North America with five seats, hinged rear windows, reversing camera, alloy wheels, fog lights and a radiator grille painted in body color.

The Transit Connect Wagon is the first Ford minivan on the market there since the Ford Freestar was discontinued at the beginning of 2007. In order to avoid the 25% customs duties on imported light commercial vehicles, Ford imported the Tourneo Connect as "vehicles for passenger transport". The vehicles shipped from Turkey will be converted in the port of Baltimore by WWL Vehicle Services Americas Inc., the rear side windows will be replaced with metal plates and the rear seats will be removed. The conversion was significantly cheaper than the usual import tax of several thousand US dollars. In North America there was only the long version with a high roof, which does not fit in most multi-story American car parks.

Transit Connect Electric (North America)

At the Geneva Motor Show 2009 Ford presented a prototype of the Ford Transit Connect with electric drive.

In cooperation with Azure Dynamics Corporation and Johnson Controls, the prototype was brought to series production and production of the Transit Connect Electric began in December 2010. The electric version of the Tourneo Connect cost from US $ 57,400 and was therefore more than twice as expensive as the gasoline-powered version.

Transit / Tourneo Connect Electric (Europe)

The bodies are delivered to the English company Smith Electric Vehicles , which uses them to build two electric cars :

On the one hand the Smith Ampere , a Tourneo Connect with a load of up to 800 kg, a 21 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery and a 50 kW permanent electric motor. This ideally achieves a range of 160 km and a top speed of 110 km / h.

The Smith Edison , a 3.5 ton Transit Connect with a payload of 1338 kg and a top speed of 80 km / h and a maximum range of 240 km.

Transit Connect X-Press

The Ford Transit Connect X-press was a prototype of the Transit Connect with the engine of the Ford Focus RS with five-speed manual transmission, but it was not built in series.

The 1.0-liter EcoBoost gasoline engine and the 1.6-liter Duratorq diesel engine were taken over from the Ford Focus , the dashboard was derived from other Ford car models. A special feature is the two-seat passenger bench with a folding center seat. The long version of the Connect has a loading length of up to three meters.

The Tourneo Connect also offers seven seats, which can be fully retracted in the rear for a flat loading area. Again there are two wheelbases, but only a medium-high roof version instead of the previous flat and high roof. The rear axle consists of a coil-sprung twist beam construction.

In addition to the previous production facilities, production in North America is also planned.

A revised version was introduced in September 2018.
