successor Kia Rio

The Kia Pride ( Hangeul : 기아 프라이드) was a small car produced by the Korean car manufacturer Kia Motors , production of which began in 1986. From 1995 it was also offered in Germany. The Kia Pride was able to come up with a comparatively good use of space and a powerful engine. The comfort equipment was quite complete in all versions with electric windows, electric antenna, air circulation, heat protection glazing and tachometer. With only one driver airbag (from 1996), the Kia Pride had little safety equipment; an anti-lock braking system was never available. Nevertheless, due to the low production costs, it was continued to be built as an affordable entry-level model for Korea and Europe until 2000.

The Kia Pride was available as a three- and five-door hatchback and as a five-door station wagon . There was always a 1.3-liter engine with a uniform 1324 cm³ (bore 71 mm × stroke 83.6 mm). Initially, the engine was offered in 2 power levels with 44 kW (60 PS) and 54 kW (73 PS). The output of the more powerful version was reduced to 53 kW (72 hp) at the beginning of 1996, which means that this version now meets the Euro 2 emissions class . The weaker engine was only installed in the three-door model. From 1997 there was only one engine variant with an output of 47 kW (64 hp) and the manual transmission version that reached the D3 emissions standard. All models had a five-speed gearbox as standard. A 3-speed automatic transmission was optionally available for the versions with 54 kW (73 PS), 53 kW (72 PS) and for the version with 47 kW (64 PS) offered until production was discontinued in 2000. The 64 hp model reaches a top speed of 150 km / h (automatic version 145 km / h).

For a surcharge, there were only three other extras: power steering, air conditioning and metallic paint. Central locking was only available in the station wagon version, but it was standard there, and was not available for the three and five-door models.

Licensed products

In badge engineering , Kia Motors built the Kia Pride on the same assembly line as Ford Festiva on behalf of Ford Motor Company , which was sold in North America and Oceania in particular. In those years it was Ford's entry-level model, available both as a small car and as a classic notchback sedan. The successor was finally the Kia Avella or Ford Aspire and the Ford Aspire Trio in Oceania. From 1988 to 1991 there was the Mazda 121, a small car from Mazda Motor Corporation . Contrary to what is often claimed, it is therefore not a "license replica" of the Mazda 121, but a joint project of the three manufacturers.

In Pakistan, the automobile manufacturer Dewan Farooque Motors was responsible for the production of the model. There the model was produced between 2000 and 2004 (or later) as the Kia Classic .

In Iran, the Kia Pride has been produced as a notchback sedan by the automobile manufacturer SAIPA since April 2000 and marketed under the name SAIPA Nasim DMi . It is one of the most successful cars in the country. In a modified version, the model has also been available as a hatchback under the designation SAIPA 141 since 2004 . The notchback variant had been renamed SAIPA 131 at the same time . In 2011 another modification came onto the market, known as a small car under the name SAIPA 111 and the notchback version as SAIPA 132 . The model has also been rolling off the assembly line in Valencia, Venezuela, since 2006 . There the model is sold under the name Venirauto Turpial .

Use of the name

In South Korea in particular, the name Pride was and is used for models that are marketed under their own name in Europe:

  • The second generation of the Kia Rio was marketed as the Kia New Pride .
  • The third generation of the Kia Rio is currently the Kia Pride in South Korea .
