The Ford Five Hundred (internal designation D258 ) was a mid-range sedan produced by the Ford Motor Company from 2004 to 2007 in the USA and the sister model of the Mercury Montego .

The model name was reminiscent of the classic Fairlane 500 and Galaxie 500 of the 1950s and 1960s. In the Ford model range, the Five Hundred was placed between the slightly smaller Ford Taurus and the larger Ford Crown Victoria . The Five Hundred was built at the Ford plant in Chicago . For the 2008 model year it received a facelift and technical modifications; at the same time the name Five Hundred was dropped in favor of the name Taurus, the Taurus (model year 2008) is only marketed under this name in the Arab world.

technology

As the successor to the Taurus in its vehicle class, the Five Hundred was aimed at direct competitors such as the Chevrolet Impala or the Toyota Avalon . Although it was over 30 cm shorter than the Ford Crown Victoria , it and its competitors surpassed it in terms of space, which was a main focus of development.

The Five Hundred was powered by a 3 liter V6 that belonged to the Ford Duratec family, and the power was transmitted via a continuously variable CVT - or a traditional six-speed automatic. For a surcharge there was all-wheel drive for all models, which came from the Volvo XC90 and, if necessary, also directed a certain proportion of the drive power to the rear wheels.

The Five Hundred was based on the Ford D3 platform, on which the Volvo S60 , S80 , XC70 and XC90 are based. The Mercury Montego and Ford Freestyle were derived from the same platform.

Model range

The Five Hundred was offered in three trim levels: SE, SEL and Limited. All models were also available with all-wheel drive for a surcharge. Prices ranged from $ 22,795 for a base front-wheel drive SE to $ 28,495 for a all-wheel drive Limited.

Model year 2006

For the 2006 model year, the Five Hundred saw only minor improvements. Radio navigation and a Sirius satellite radio were available for an additional charge.

Model year 2007

Five Hundred Limited

The 2007 model of the Five Hundred also remained practically unchanged. The SE model was omitted. New was a chrome package, which was available at an extra charge, and comprised chrome-plated five-spoke aluminum rims (18 inches) and a chrome grille. Furthermore, Ford increased the warranty on the drive train to 5 years / 60,000 miles and from spring 2007 side airbags in the front and side head airbags were standard equipment.

End of production of the Five Hundred

At the Detroit Motor Show in early 2007, Ford showed a revised Five Hundred and announced that it would return to the Taurus designation with this model from the 2008 model year. The new version received a revised front and rear section and a 194 kW 3.5-liter V6 instead of the previous 3.0-liter V6 with just 154 kW.
