Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise (NDL .: "Sint Pauwels aan de Ternaas") is a French municipality with 4971 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement Arras and is the capital of the canton of Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise . The city lies on the banks of the Ternoise River .

history

Saint-Pol-sur-Ternoise was the center of the county of Saint-Pol in the Middle Ages .

The Saint-Pol area was the location of German fighter pilots during the German occupation in World War II. From the end of May 1940, various command staffs were quartered in the Château des Brias, located 5 km northeast, and the fighters available to the squadron staff were located at the Saint Pol-Brias field airfield , which was located between the two villages directly to the east of today's D 941. During the Battle of Britain from the beginning of July to mid-November 1940, the airfield was used by the Bf 109E of the III. Jagdgeschwader 2 (III./JG 2) group used. In addition to JG 2, Saint-Pol was also the location of JG 3 , JG 27 and JG 51 .
