Gommecourt is a French commune in the Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Arras and the canton of Avesnes-le-Comte . The inhabitants are called Gommecourtois .

geography

Gommecourt is located about 22 kilometers southwest of Arras on the border with the Somme department . Gommecourt is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Foncquevillers and Hannescamps in the west and northwest, Bucquoy in the east, Puisieux in the southeast and Hébuterne in the south.

history

Gommecourt was the scene of fierce fighting during the First World War and formed the westernmost point on the German western front . In the summer of 1916, the Battle of the Somme raged just south of Gommecourt .
