history

Destruction in Bapaume

During the Franco-Prussian War on January 3, 1871, the battle of Bapaume between the French Northern Army and the VIII Army Corps of Prussia took place near the city , but it ended in a draw. During the First World War , the region was one of the fiercely contested areas, the city was almost completely destroyed. The town hall (built in 1610) was destroyed in 1917 by an explosive device from the Germans (with a time fuse) and rebuilt in 1935 under Mayor Abel Guidet.

“One of the hateful inventions was the time bombs that were buried in the basements of undamaged buildings. They were divided into two parts by a metal wall. One chamber was filled with explosives, the other with an acid. After these devil's eggs had been hidden, the acid ate through the metal wall in weeks of work and ignited. One of them blew up the town hall of Bapaume just as the heads of the authorities had gathered in it for a victory celebration. "

Since 2016 there has been a memorial stone on the town hall square to the then flying ace Oswald Boelcke , who died outside of Bapaumes during an air battle 100 years earlier.

Even in World War II , Bapaume was a competitive place. A little outside in the west was the Bapaume-Grévillers airfield . Mayor Guidet worked in the Resistance , he was deported to the Groß-Rosen concentration camp and died there on November 27, 1944. In memory of him there has been a memorial in the village since 1948 that shows him lying down at the moment of his arrest. In the town hall there is an urn with earth made of large roses and a painting of him.

Town twinning

Bapaume maintains a partnership with the city of Moers on the Lower Rhine.
