Saint-Laurent-Blangy (formerly Blangy-les-Arras ) is a French commune in the department of Pas-de-Calais in the region of Hauts-de-France . The municipality with 6606 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) belongs to the Arrondissement of Arras and is part of the canton of Arras-2 . The inhabitants are called Immercuriens .
geography
Saint-Laurent-Blangy is located in the historic province of Artois on the canalised Scarpe . Saint-Laurent-Blangy is surrounded by the neighboring communities of Bailleul-Sir-Berthoult in the north, Athies in the east, Feuchy in the south-east, Tilloy-lès-Mofflaines in the south and south-east, Arras in the south and south-west, Saint-Nicolas in the west and Roclincourt in the Northwest.
Part of the Arras-Roclincourt airport is in the municipality.
history
A mass cemetery is located here from the fighting in the First World War. The German military cemetery, which was designed between 1921 and 1922, houses the graves of 31,339 soldiers (including Walter Bud ) and is now maintained by the Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge. Some distance away lies the British war cemetery at Bailleul Road East (here, among others, Isaac Rosenberg is buried). The place was completely destroyed during the World War.
