Isaac Rosenberg was the son of a Russian - Jewish emigrant family . In 1897 the family moved to London , where his parents opened a butcher shop. At the age of 14 he began training as an engraver . A friend of the family, Lilly Joseph, recognized his artistic talent and financed his studies at the renowned Slade School of Fine Art in London. In addition to painting, he also wrote poems that he sent to editorial offices and magazines. In 1912 Rosenberg published a small volume of poetry Night and Day at his expense . His 24-page brochure showed a strong romantic influence, especially from the poems of John Keats and Percy Bysshe Shelley . During this time he met Edward Marsh , one of the leading figures in the London art world. He became his sponsor and brought him together with Ezra Pound , Ford Madox Ford and James Joyce . Marsh took Rosenberg's poems into the Georgian Poetry Collection 1916–1917 (1917), which he edited . For health reasons, Rosenberg had to travel to Cape Town , South Africa in 1913 , where he continued to work as an artist. When the First World War broke out, he returned to England in 1915, but lacked any professional prospects. He volunteered for military service and came to France with his regiment. Rosenberg is regarded as one of the best poets of his generation; including Wilfred Owen , Robert Graves and Rupert Brooke , among others . Isaac Rosenberg died on April 1, 1918 at the Battle of Arras; his body was buried in the Bailleul Road East Cemetery near Saint-Laurent-Blangy .
