The Ford FK series is a series of truck models that Ford Germany manufactured between 1951 and 1961. The designation "FK" was the short form of "Ford Cologne".

First series (1951–1955)

After the V8 gasoline engine of the Ford Rhein had proven to be too uneconomical, the Cologne Ford works looked for a suitable diesel engine. They finally found it in a construction made by the US manufacturer Hercules . The six-cylinder , four - stroke diesel engine with a displacement of 4080 cm³ developed an output of 94 hp (69 kW). This unit - manufactured under license from Knorr in Munich for Ford - was installed in the three-tonne Ford Rhein, as well as in the larger 3½-tonne FK 3500 D and four-tonne FK 4000 D. Due to problems with stability, the engine output soon increased to 85 HP (62.5 kW) withdrawn.

Disputes with the Südwerke , which had the names "Rhein" and "Ruhr" protected without Ford noticing, led to the decision to offer Ford trucks in future under the name FK in connection with the payload in kilograms. There was soon a FK 2000 with a 3.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, 52 hp (38 kW) and a payload of 2 tons, and an FK 3000 with a 3.3-liter four-cylinder petrol engine, 57 hp (42 kW) ) Power and 3 tons of payload and an FK 3500 with 3.9-liter V8 petrol engine, 95 PS (70 kW) and 3.5 tons of payload.

The cabs have also been revised. They now had headlights integrated into the fenders and a radiator grille with seven horizontal chrome struts.

In June 1954 the FK 4000 S was presented. It had a six-cylinder diesel engine made by Hercules that was enlarged to 4460 cm³ and delivered a continuous output of 90 hp (66 kW). The 3.3-liter four-cylinder engine was removed from the program, while the V8 engine was revised and now delivered 100 hp (74 kW). But the increase in displacement did not make the diesel engine more reliable either.

The cabs received a rectangular chrome grill and split windshields. Ford trucks were built in this form until the end of 1955.

Second series (1955–1961)

At the end of 1955, Ford presented a new FK series. There was now the 2.5-tonner FK 2500, the 3.5-tonner FK 3500 and the 4.5-tonner FK 4500. The most noticeable feature of the new series was a redesigned driver's cab with a one-piece, curved windshield, round nose and one Radiator grille made of twelve vertically arranged chrome struts.

The diesel engines have been completely redeveloped. They were two-stroke V-engines with a 90 ° cylinder angle, reverse scavenging with Roots blower and indirect vortex chamber injection . The 2.8-liter V4 version had 80 hp (59 kW) at 2800 rpm and a compression of 18.6: 1 as well as a maximum torque of 215 Nm at 1800-2000 rpm; the 4.2-liter V6 version delivered 120 hp (88 kW). A four- or five-speed gearbox was available as an option.

The expectation of the long life expectancy of the two-stroke engine as promised in the sales prospectus, thanks to fewer parts subject to wear, was not fulfilled. The thermostatically controlled cooling system, the high thermal conductivity of the light metal cylinder heads and the wet cylinder liners (surrounded by the cooling water) were also particularly emphasized . In addition, the fuel was cleaned by pre and fine filters and - due to the relatively short piston stroke of 105 mm (bore 92 mm) - an average piston speed of 9.8 m / s. But already at the beginning of 1956 it became clear that these engines were also unable to withstand the harsh everyday conditions in commercial vehicles: the cylinder liners deformed in the area of the thermally highly stressed exhaust slots. As a remedy, the cylinders were drilled out conically, but this did not bring lasting success. In the first six months of 1956, the number of complaints exceeded the number of new vehicles delivered, so that the construction of new diesel engines was temporarily stopped in order to be able to cope with the general overhaul at all. In mid-1957, the two diesel engines were taken out of the range.

The second FK series was still available with the V8 petrol engine with 3924 cm³ displacement and 100 PS (74 kW) output. They were still available in this form until 1961. Then they were hired without a successor. From 1962 trucks with the second series cabs and more stable engines were built by Ford of Britain .

The chassis of the trucks of the FK series consisted of a ladder frame and two rigid axles with telescopic shock absorbers, guided by longitudinal leaf springs. The foot brake worked hydraulically on drum brakes on all four wheels (front duplex brakes ), the hand brake worked mechanically on the rear wheels. The wheelbase of the FK 2500 was 3700 mm, the total length of the vehicle 5780 mm, the width 2110 mm and the height when loaded 2225 mm. The tire size of the front wheels as well as the rear twin tires was uniformly 6.50-20.

The maximum and continuous speed was given as 85 km / h. The fuel consumption of the diesel engine according to the then DIN 70030 or with half the payload and three quarters of the maximum speed was 12.3 l / 100 km. The tank held 100 liters. According to the factory, the oil consumption was 0.25 l / 100 km.
