The Angel of Cultures is a socio-cultural art project by the visual artists Carmen Dietrich and Gregor Merten. They see it as a symbol for tolerance , intercultural dialogue and interreligious coexistence of the Abrahamic religions , i.e. the three world religions Christianity, Judaism and Islam, which is brought to the public in the form of an art campaign with the participation of citizens. In this way, according to the artists' ideas, a social sculpture is formed which "expresses the desire of many to live together in equality and peaceful solidarity and thus decisively counteracts right-wing extremist, xenophobic, anti-Semitic and Islamophobic tendencies."

The project was initiated by the artists in 2008 and the sculpture was laid as inlays in a large number of cities, in addition to German cities, for example, in Brussels at the EU Parliament and in 2018 in Tel Aviv-Jaffa , there in 2014 as a wall object.

In these art actions, a steel hollow body around 1.50 meters is moved together through the urban space. Surrounded by a ring, the symbols cross , star of David and crescent are incorporated. Unintentionally by the artists, the silhouette of an angel becomes visible in this arrangement .

The art action is carried out in the respective city at several stations with the involvement of representatives of various religious communities and local schools. The ring-shaped steel sculpture of the angel is rolled through the city. At each of the stations, a temporary image of the inner angel is created from white sand, and speeches, musical interludes, prayers for peace and culinary delights are provided by those involved on site. Finally, an inlay in the shape of an angel is set into the ground as a permanent symbol and a ring for the inlay of the next city is made with the cutting torch together with those present.

An installation of the metal ring proposed in 2011 as a landmark on the Mottbruchhalde in Gladbeck was rejected by the local city administration in 2012.

According to his own statement, the project was initially financed through the sale of jewelry and small objects; Since 2016, the project has also been transferred to a foundation that is financed by contributions and donations. Both the symbol and the term “Angel of Cultures” were registered by the artists in 2011 as a word or figurative mark .
