The Mottbruchhalde is a mining dump in Gladbeck - Brauck and is located on the route of the Emscher Park cycle path . Its northern foot borders the Natroper Feld nature reserve , a wetland area created by subsidence.

Until 1989, the Mottbruchhalde was filled with the spoil from the Moltke III / IV colliery . The heap has an area of 54 hectares and by the time mining was stopped, only 8 of the originally planned 30 million tons of overburden were heaped here.

Since Deutsche Steinkohle had an operating license until 2004, the question arose how to deal with this landscape structure in use. According to a concept by the Amsterdam landscape architect Lodewijk Baljon and the Frankfurt artist Schmitz , the Mottbruchhalde became a “Halde im Wandel” and was to grow into a kind of volcanic landscape in various phases.
