The LWL-Freilichtmuseum Hagen - Westfälisches Landesmuseum für Handwerk und Technik ( WFH ) is an open-air museum in the Hagen district of Selbecke in the Mäckingerbachtal in the southeastern Ruhr area . The regional association of Westphalia-Lippe (LWL) is the sponsor .

In contrast to most European open-air museums, the WFH is not dedicated to depicting everyday rural life, but the history of craft and technology .

Efforts by a group of engineers and homeland security officers to preserve technical monuments for posterity have been made since the 1920s. In 1929 , the then Mayor of Hagen, Alfred Finke, wrote a letter to Oskar von Miller , the founder of the Deutsches Museum , in which he suggested building an open-air museum of technical cultural monuments in Hagen. The initiator Wilhelm Claas suggested the Mäckingerbachtal as a location for a corresponding museum as early as 1930 . The narrow valley in the foothills of the Sauerland offers the most important natural location factors for trades in the 18th and 19th centuries, wind, water and forest.

The museum was built by Fritz Helmut Sonnenschein , who also ran the museum. Previously, he was the head of the technical department at the Dortmund Building Department. After the war, contrary to other resolutions, he tried to rebuild the Romberg Castle . As a result, he fell out of favor with the Dortmund city administration, but the Hagen city administration now became aware of him, which also contributed to this task. He headed the museum until October 1, 1987. After that, Michael Deuskardt took over this position, whose successor is the current director Uwe Beckmann.

On July 22nd, 1960, the open-air museum was founded as the "Westphalian Open-Air Museum of Technical Cultural Monuments - State Museum for Technology and Craft History - Hagen" together with the LWL Open-Air Museum in Detmold . After the Deutsches Museum in Munich, it was one of the first museums to specialize in technology and its history. The opening to the public took place on April 30, 1973.

Since 1983, the WFH has also been the location of the German Forging Museum , which was initially housed in Altena Castle since 1960 . It is housed in the former town hall of Neunkirchen from 1754, which was rebuilt in the WFH.

In December 1987, major changes were made to the museum's concept. Not only were the core tasks such as inventory and research into the collections intensified, but the focus was also placed on people and the interrelationship between people and technology. A concept was also pursued that was later summarized under the term museum education , first mentioned in a report by the museum's first female educator Christiane Kremer in 1989. This also resulted in the museum being renamed. It was now called "Westphalian Open Air Museum. State Museum for Crafts and Technology. ”In 1992 the addition“ Hagen ”was added, as well as other small changes later, so that it is now called“ LWL-Freilichtmuseum Hagen, Westphalian State Museum for Crafts and Technology ”.

present

About sixty workshops were rebuilt or reconstructed on the approximately 42 hectare site of the WFH.

Most of them are ready for operation and some of them are also regularly produced for demonstration purposes or workshops are offered. This gives visitors an insight into the development of handicrafts and trades in the region from the end of the 18th century through early industrial production to high-level industrialization at the beginning of the 20th century.

The brewery has been in active operation again since May 2012, where the Mäckinger own brand is created. There is also a traditional museum bakery, where bread and (raisin) mares are available for a low price. The German Blacksmith Museum is also located in the open-air museum.
