The Maximilianpark in the Westphalian city of Hamm is an amusement park that has been built on the site of the disused Maximilian colliery since the state horticultural show in 1984 and whose symbol is the glass elephant , a 40 m high walkable sculpture . The regional association Ruhr and the city of Hamm are responsible for the Maximilian Park .

The Maximilianpark is located on the north bank of the Geithe brook, 4.5 km east of the Hammer city center and 1.5 km south of the Datteln-Hamm Canal in Ostwennemar on the border with Werries in the Hamm-Uentrop district .
The park is part of the Route of Industrial Culture and the Roman Route .
There is a train station for the museum railway to Lippborg near the main entrance .
Adventure world
The park is visited by around 350,000 people annually. It offers different nature and cultural experiences:
- Plastic glass elephant by the artist Horst Rellecke in the former coal washing plant of the colliery with elevator and viewing platform at a height of 35 m
- Concerts, children's theater and cabaret in the former laundrette and the electrical center or in the open air
- Largest tropical butterfly house in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with hundreds of butterflies in a 600 m² jungle landscape with humid 26 ° C and 80% humidity
- Maximiliansee with pond and marsh areas
- Children's paradise with play dunes, climbing nets, water playground and pirate ship
- Green classroom with an environmental education program in the school and farm garden

- Dogs (except guide dogs) are not allowed in the park. In front of the main entrance there are two lockable dog boxes for free use.
Events
Five markets take place in the park every year: spring, garden , medieval , autumn and Christmas markets . The autumn glow has been taking place every autumn since 2009, and laser shows and fireworks festivals are occasionally part of the program.
Concert and theater performances, comedy shows and children's parties are often held in the park.
There are also events about nature and around 1500 years of city and regional history.
In addition to events, Maximilianpark also offers its visitors permanent and special exhibitions, such as the glass elephant in the palm garden with ten kinetic objects by the artist Horst Rellecke. There are also the perennial beds by landscape architect Piet Oudolf and other works of art by Jockel Reisner, Otmar Alt and other artists.
history
The park was built on the former site of the Maximilian colliery. The coal washing machine was integrated into the glass elephant and relics from the mining era in the park are a reminder of its history.
