Heap of large wood

The Große Holz heap in Bergkamen

The stockpile Big Wood is a rehabilitated and landscaped slag heap of mining in Bergkamen . The 145.8  m above sea level NHN the neighboring Datteln-Hamm Canal and the Lippe heap, which towers over 100 m, is located in a forest area known as "Large Wood", the remains of which now surround the Beversee .

Emergence

The stockpile was established in 1962 as a mining heap (since 1998 with the mines Haus Aden and monopoly Zeche Heinrich-Robert for Mine East combined) created. In 2005 it was counted among the burning heaps .

"Sunken Grove"

With the creation of the dump as a landscaping structure , Ruhrkohle AG pursued a new concept; the previous dump forms (pointed cone dumps, table mountains) were now a thing of the past. In 1974 landscape architects drew up a basic plan with a total area of 122.4 hectares at the time and a maximum height of 170 m. Since the neighboring mines were closed earlier than originally planned, the heap only reached a height of almost 150 m. A special feature of the dump landscape is the so-called "sunken grove", which forms a small pond through the inflowing surface water.

The Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) acquired the 140 hectare dump in 2006 and then invested over two million euros in the landscaping. 90% of the funds come from funding programs of the European Union and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia ( ecology program in the Emscher-Lippe area ÖPEL). The remaining 10% come from RVR's own resources.

Corridor park

The sculptures are reminiscent of the nearby winding tower.

The corridor park, which opened on July 29, 2009, is a three-kilometer asphalt serpentine from the west side (forest road) up to the summit, across the plateau and down again in the east to a ramp that connects to the town of Bergkamen. The blue design elements tie in with the blue ribbon of the city, which connects the two city centers with blue mosaic strips and a stream. In the corridor park there are nine lighthouses made of steel and Plexiglas , which also shimmer bluish at night (see picture), the viewing platform “Bastion” just below the summit is surrounded by gabions filled with blue glass , which on the west side became around 7,000 m² of shrubbery areas consciously created with blue flowering plants. Among other things, the adder's head , ox tongue , lavender , lupine , sage , buddleia , beard flower and perovskia were used there. On the east side, a 3,000-square-foot grass plateau was different aster species and juniper applied.

In addition to the corridor park , side paths to the Adener Höhe and the planned tree plateau of Deutsche Steinkohle (DSK), a rescue route to the Adener Höhe and connections to the regional cycle path network with the Roman route and the Emscher Park cycle path have been created. The paths are provided with benches.

The dump seen from Oberaden

Today the heap serves as a panorama of the Route of Industrial Culture . To the north you have a view of the Datteln-Hamm Canal with the Marina Rünthe , the Rünther Westenhellweg and the Lippe. To the east is the Beversee nature reserve. The Bayer Schering Pharma AG plant and the former Monopol mine can be seen to the south-east . The remaining industrial facilities of the Haus Aden colliery are to the west.

Light sculpture impulse

Impulse light sculpture (back)

The light sculpture “Impulse” on the heap was completed on December 2nd, 2010. The sculpture by the artist brothers Maik and Dirk Löbbert is around 30 m high and built on a 5 m deep concrete base. It consists of a white, coated steel column about 30 m high with a diameter of 60 cm, the 14,400 LEDs , which are also white, make the stele pulsate in the dark. The light art , which cost 650,000 euros, was financed from NRW state funds, RAG Montan Immobilien and funds from the “ Hellweg - ein Lichtweg ” cultural project .

future

Filling and modeling area

In the northern part of the heap, further filling was planned until 2015. Afterwards, the tree plateau and the "natural arena" as an event location will be created there as additional landscape elements. In addition, the "sewer belt" is planned on the northern edge of the heap, along the DHK. In addition to the leisure-oriented design of this section (viewpoint, market square), there are options for sporting activities (horse riding, cross-country skiing, soap box route).
