The water towers on Hellweg are in Hamm Mountains and are used for uniform supply of drinking water from Hamm . The two tall, round towers made of concrete, partly clad in brick, have wide, round, white tops and arched dome roofs. As a landmark and due to its technical and urban historical significance, its outer shell has been a listed building since 1991.

Tower WT2000

The eastern tower is mostly light-colored and divided in the lower part by neo-Romanesque forms . It was built from 1907 to 1908 and raised by almost 19 meters in 1935 with the help of hydraulic rams . In the war year 1944, the tower was severely damaged by a bomb hit, provisionally repaired shortly after the end of the war and finally repaired in 1948. It holds 2,000 cubic meters of drinking water in its steel tank and has no other accessible interior spaces.

Tower WT3000

The western water tower was built from 1949 to 1952. Its storage container holds 3,000 cubic meters. In addition to the container, it has several false ceilings, a surrounding staircase and a glazed viewing platform. It replaced a water tower built in 1915, damaged in World War II and blown up at the end of the war, with an iron container on supports.

Water supply

The water towers are operated by Stadtwerke Hamm . The drinking water for Hamm is obtained from the bank filtrate of the Ruhr at the Warmen waterworks 30 km away . From there, it is pumped up into the earth container on the Haarstrang, which is 220 meters above sea level, and flows through a natural gradient in underground pipelines to the water towers (maximum water level 132 meters). These serve to equalize the pressure immediately before the drinking water is distributed in Hamm. On an average day, around 40,000 cubic meters of water are distributed. The small building with the pumping and distribution station is located between the two water towers.

Further use

The towers are illuminated at night.

In the other rooms there is a collection of the municipal utilities on the subjects of water, electricity and gas supply. Older electrical or gas-powered household appliances, a wooden water pipe that is more than two hundred years old, further information and exhibits on the service areas of the municipal utilities (e.g. measuring devices) and the history of (drinking) water are shown. The collection can only be viewed during special city tours organized by the Hamm Tourist Office.

A relay station (DB0HAT) for radio amateurs von Hamm was located on the dome of the WT3000 until 2012 . This was moved to the Hammer port area in 2012.

The towers are illuminated at night, and on special occasions in different colors.
