Lanstroper egg

The Lanstroper egg is a water tower steely K- truss and steel - container , since 1981 already as a water tower without filling and out of service.

This tower is visible from afar on a hill south of the A 2 motorway in the north-east of Dortmund , in the Lanstrop district . The nickname is derived from this location and the shape of the steel container, although strictly speaking the tower is located in the Grevel district and the container is not actually egg-shaped .

Construction

The construction of the container standing on a scaffolding with the walls reinforced at the edge is also called the Barkhausen container after its designer, civil engineer Professor Georg Barkhausen from the Technical University of Hanover . This type of water container with a hemispherical bottom (with the Klönne design supplemented by a hemispherical cover to form a sphere, in this case extended by a cylinder segment inserted in between) was developed as early as 1898 and was particularly widespread after the turn of the century.

history

The Dortmund steel construction company Aug. Klönne built the water tower between 1904 and 1905 on behalf of the gas and water works of the city of Unna . Due to the high water consumption of the surrounding mines Gneisenau , Preußen , Scharnhorst and Minister Achenbach , the water supply could no longer be ensured without such an elevated tank. It also served the water supply of the Dortmund districts Derne , Lanstrop, Mengede and the Lüner district Brambauer .

The structure is 14 m wide, 55.5 m high including scaffolding and weighs 180 tons . Its capacity is 2000 m 3 .

In 1981 the operation as a water tower was stopped, since 1985 the tower has been registered as a monument in the monument list of the city of Dortmund . Because the Lanstroper egg is the last remaining Barkhausen container in the Ruhr area. As early as 1965, Bernd and Hilla Becher had photographed it as evidence of industrial architecture . Conversions for residential or commercial purposes planned by various owners could not be carried out, so that a fundamental restoration of the building was not carried out for a long time. An association has been trying to preserve the building since 1997.

The Lanstroper Egg is also a landmark in various crime novels that were published by Grafit-Verlag with Ruhr area flair .

Remodeling plans

In 2007 the city of Dortmund bought the building. According to information provided by the Lanstroper Ei development association and the municipal property office on March 7, 2012, plans for reconstruction are in place, according to which the Lanstroper Ei will have an extension in the form of the mirrored water tower in addition to the necessary renovation work. The city of Dortmund has drawn up a budget for both project sections. According to this, around 2.1 million euros must be estimated for the renovation, as well as 1.14 million euros for the extension. The one to two storey extension building with a usable area of 240 m² is to be used for gastronomy as well as training and cultural events.
