The mining official settlement Neu-Asseln  - also settlement Am Knie  - is a colliery settlement in the district of Neuasseln in the Brackel district with the addresses Am Knie 3-19 and 10-32. The small settlement was built in 1922 by Phoenix AG for mining and smelting operations as a residential complex for Steiger and administrative employees ("civil servants") of the Schleswig colliery based on designs by the Essen architect Fritz Schupp . The houses are together "with relics of the former coal mine Schleswig and the street Neuhammerweg" on March 8, 1989 under the serial no. 0002 has been registered as architectural monuments in the monuments list of the city of Dortmund and part of the route of industrial culture . The Bochum housing company Viterra Wohnen (today Vonovia ) privatized the 21 residential buildings with 26 apartments to tenants in 2002.

Monument protection

According to the annex to the list of monuments, the "civil servants' settlement" consists of nine main bodies as well as smaller auxiliary buildings: two single, four double, one triple and two quadruple houses with a total of twenty-one entrances. The settlement complex is accessed through the street Am Knie, an optically wide street that leads to a rectangular square surrounded by buildings. The extensive development is held together by partly high walls between the buildings. The specialty is that these nine groups of houses with enclosures and outbuildings are listed as an ensemble.

The few technical remnants of the mining past are also protected. Another special feature was that from 1860 until the neighboring colliery was closed, there was a brine bath in which the salty pit water was used for therapeutic applications. The former brand control of the colliery and brine bath and the bathing establishment on Neuhammerweg, which was later converted into a residential building, have been preserved.

Settlement development

Since 1998 VEBA Wohnen and, after a renaming, Viterra Wohnen have been running an extensive privatization and sales program. When the planned privatization of the Am Knie settlement and neighboring streets became known in early 2001, a tenant council was formed for the streets Am Knie, Neuhammerweg, Quartlenbeckstraße, An der Eiche and Auf dem Karmerg. The buying interest among the residents was so high that the sales process proceeded rapidly. Moderated by the head of the planning department Ullrich Sierau and the municipal housing office, the "Agreement for the further development of the Am Knie settlement" was drawn up, which affirmed the high level of protection against dismissal for non-buyers according to the principles of the GSB Gesellschaft zuricherung von Bergmannswohnungen mbH as well as the design principles and was approved by the city, Viterra Wohnen, the tenants 'council and the tenants' associations were signed.
