Neustadt colliery settlement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Neustadt colliery is a listed area in Ahlen in the Warendorf district in North Rhine-Westphalia .

History and architecture

The miners' settlement was designed from 1910 to 1924 under the direction of Josef Stübben under the influence of the garden city movement and built in four construction phases by the Westphalia mining union . The settlement is located immediately north of the Westphalia colliery between Humboldtstrasse and Sattelstrasse and the Förderweg. The complex mainly consists of picturesque groups of buildings made up of double or four-family houses. In the kitchen gardens at the rear, stables are partially built on. By cleverly staggering the buildings, the estate gives the impression of a rural idyll. The different house types, mostly with mansard roofs , are equipped with shutters. From 1981, the uniform building versions were gradually restored. The rectangular Glückaufplatz with two-storey buildings formed the center with the “Konsum” grocery store and school. The former social and political meeting point was the former Westfalenhof restaurant from 1911. The entrance to the colliery is designed as an avenue , with a small park next to it.
