Garden city of Welheim
The garden city Welheim is a workers' settlement in Bottrop in the Ruhr area .
The garden city is located in the Welheim district .
The garden city was built from 1914 to 1923 for the miners of mine 1/2 of the " United Welheim colliery ". The settlement, which consists of 650 buildings, now has around 2700 inhabitants, making it one of the largest and, with 40 different house types, one of the most diverse workers' settlements in the Ruhr area. The relatively large houses hide the fact that the individual apartments were often only 35 m² in size. Beyond the mine railway, the civil servants' settlement was built with larger residential units.
In 1931, production at the “United Welheim colliery” ended and the colliery facilities were converted into a hydrogenation plant . This changed the population structure of the until then pure miners' settlement. During the Second World War , the settlement between industrial facilities was badly damaged, and almost a quarter of the houses had to be rebuilt.
As part of the IBA Emscherpark , the estate was modernized and the quality of living increased by merging apartments, installing bathrooms and converting the heating. A memorial area statute has been in effect for the settlement since 1993. Today the garden city Welheim is part of the route of industrial culture , the tenants' initiative Welheim offers guided tours.
