The Schüngelberg workers' settlement on the outskirts of Gelsenkirchen-Buer was built from 1897 in several construction phases for the miners of the Hugo colliery and their families. It was renovated in 1989 as part of the International Building Exhibition (IBA). In 1993 it was linked to a new building project consisting of around 200 apartments and built on an open space of around seven hectares next to the original settlement. From there a staircase leads to the Rungenberg dump . The Schüngelbergsiedlung is part of the route of industrial culture .
