The garden city Hüttenau is a working class neighborhood in Hattinger district Welper dating back to the year 1909 and on ideas of social reformers in Great Britain and to the garden city concept inspired.

The initiator was Karl Thiel , who wrote at the time: “The spatial separation of families from the clod, which only the wealthy of our age can avoid, runs counter to natural joy. Since the cosmic laws are binding for all people, the principle of free people also applies to everyone - the less well-off as well as the wealthy. "

In 1909, Thiel called for the establishment of a building cooperative and commissioned the architect Georg Metzendorf , who had been the head architect of the Margarete Krupp Foundation in Essen since 1908, to plan and implement a garden city as a countermovement to the concept of tenements . A total of 400 houses with running water, separate bathroom, connection to sewers, heating via a central system, electricity connection and a larger garden were built within several years.

The settlement was considered exemplary and attracted attention all over Germany. The Gartenstadt Hüttenau eG cooperative currently owns around 1,200 apartments.
