The listed settlements of the Niederberg colliery are located between Neukirchen and Vluyn at the eponymous colliery.

The Niederberg colliery started mining with shaft 1 in 1917, shaft 2 followed in 1921. Housing was needed for the miners and their families, who were mainly recruited from Upper Silesia and Poland. The operator of the colliery, the Niederrheinische Bergwerksgesellschaft, set up two colliery colonies for this purpose .

The location of the settlements exactly between the places allowed them to grow together to form the town of Neukirchen-Vluyn .

Old colony

The old colony ( coordinates ) was built between 1917 and 1925 east of the colliery. Three different house types in one and a half to two-storey construction alternate. They were built from bricks and have expressionistic decorative elements on the entrances and gables. Each house had a garden with stables for self-sufficiency. At the southern end of the settlement there are some larger and more elegant officials' houses. In the north, east of Hindenburgplatz, the plate colony ( coordinates ), built around 1918 , fits into the old colony.

New colony

The new colony ( coordinates ) was built south of the colliery between 1926 and 1930. The two-storey log houses are arranged around the courtyards, jogging back and forth. Inside were the gardens with the centrally arranged stables. The entrances to the houses were on the courtyard side. The brick facades also show expressionist decorative elements, but significantly less than in the old colony. The curved gables on six houses in Etzoldstrasse are striking.
