The Steag headquarters (also the Ruhrkohle administration building ) is an office complex built in Essen's southern district in the late 1950s , which has been a listed building since 1992 . It was built according to plans by the architect Egon Eiermann .

history

The German architect Egon Eiermann (1904–1970) built the building as a reinforced concrete structure in the style of post-war modernism between 1956 and 1960 with a striking facade made of ceramic, black tiles and flush-fitting windows. The cubic windows are closely staggered and their additive arrangement results in a clear grid, a typical design feature of Eiermann. Another feature is the connection of the transverse structures with glass bridges and the coordination of the building heights with one another. Due to the distance between the building and the street, the orderly design and the many windows, the building appears less representative than it is proportioned and transparent. The administration building is one of Eiermann's most important buildings.

"" The task given to the architect was ... that the house, in terms of its character and external impression, should take into account the severity of the miners' work underground. That would mean avoiding the very bad so-called "representative character" in any case . "

The client was the then Essener Steinkohlenbergwerke AG as one of the five founding companies of Steag , the St einkohlen- E lectric AG , in 1937.

The partly seven and partly eight-story main building was used for the mine administration. A five-storey wing of the building with a separate entrance to further offices of the sales companies connects at right angles.

The Essen architects Kohl & Kohl changed and expanded the building slightly in the early 1990s.

The building today

Today the headquarters of the RAG Foundation , founded in 2007 , which controls the socially acceptable adjustment process in the German hard coal mining industry, is based in the Steag-Haus. She is the owner of RAG Aktiengesellschaft and a partner in Evonik Industries .

In mid-2011, Steag was spun off from Evonik Steag through the sale of 51 percent to the Stadtwerke-Konsortium Rhein-Ruhr, since then the Steag logo has been attached to its company headquarters again.

The building has been part of the Route of Industrial Culture since 2011 . In front of him is the four meter high bronze sculpture Dynamics by the Romanian sculptor Ladis Schwartz .
