The southern quarter of the city of Essen , together with the western quarter , northern quarter , eastern quarter , southeast quarter and the city center, form the city center .

character

The southern district with its high-rise office buildings shapes the skyline of Essen more than any other district . Here, among others, Evonik Industries AG (formerly RAG or Ruhrkohle AG), RWE AG , Evonik Steag GmbH , Hochtief AG, MAN Ferrostaal AG and, until 2014, the technology division of ThyssenKrupp AG have their headquarters.

Evonik has its headquarters in RellingHaus II, which was built in 1999. In its place, the striking brick building complex of Ruhrkohle AG from 1949 was demolished in 1997. Saint Barbara, the patron saint of mining, was attached to its old facade in the form of a natural stone sculpture. This sculpture was preserved and is now in the courtyard of the new Evonik corporate headquarters. To the west is the Nordsternhaus of the insurance company of the same name on Freedom Square . After the renovation was completed in 2016, it will continue to serve as a centrally located office building.

Furthermore, have the Ruhr Regional Association , the Ruhr Association , the Lippeverband and Emschergenossenschaft important, for the entire Ruhr competent organizations in the Essen Südviertel located. The by Wilhelm Kreis designed and 1910 finished building the Emschergenossenschaft was in World War II heavily damaged and then rebuilt. The historic conference room and the 37 meter high tower were almost spared.

In addition, the Aalto Theater and the hall and the Essen Philharmonic can be found in the Essen city garden . To the southeast is Isenbergplatz , which is considered the center of the art scene. The Huyssenallee runs to the west, a spacious boulevard that connects the city center with Rüttenscheid. Heinrich Arnold Huyssen , industrialist and former mayor, donated the area of Huyssenallee, which was an upscale residential area with the area around the city garden of Essen until the Second World War . In a bomb attack in March 1945 this area of the city was almost completely destroyed. The reconstruction according to other aspects resulted in mostly office buildings in the former residential area in the 1950s.

The Folkwang Museum is also located in the southern quarter, as is the newly built Glückaufhaus , the facade of which is listed. In 2009 the film studio Glückauf from the 1920s was reopened. On Bismarckplatz, behind the Bismarck monument, is the former central railway administration of the Ruhr area, which has been housed in the Essen railway headquarters since 1898 . After it stood empty after the rail reform in 1994, it has been in use since October 2010 by Deutsche Bank , which renovated the office complex for this purpose.

Across from Kruppstrasse is the listed Osram-Haus , which has been a hotel since 2020. Behind it was the so-called newspaper quarter, in which the Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung moved into its first own publishing house in 1953. Secondary schools belong to the quarter: the Robert Schuman vocational college for economics and administration founded in 1956 on Kruppstrasse and the Hugo Kükelhaus vocational college on Gärtnerstrasse. The newspaper district was emptied at the beginning of 2019 by the Funke media group , which moved into the new media house of the Funke media group in Essen's west quarter. From April 2019 the old newspaper district was torn down. The new literary quarter with hotels, offices and apartments is to be built by 2022 .

To the south of the former Luisenschule on Bismarckplatz, which was converted into the House of Essen History , the Essen city archive was moved into in October 2009. The Essen architect Frank Ahlbrecht designed the new magazine and clad the entire facade with COR-TEN steel . The archive material of the city of Essen, which was previously distributed over the entire city area, is now housed here centrally in a total of 17 kilometers of shelves.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the Essen city center

Blazon : "In blue an oblique left golden (yellow) sword, accompanied above and below by three golden (yellow) balls."

The coat of arms was designed by Kurt Schweder and never had an official character. At the end of the 1980s, the heraldist created coats of arms for all of Essen's districts. They have meanwhile been well received by the Essen population.

The sword as an attribute of the city patrons Cosmas and Damian makes the reference to the Essen city coat of arms. The golden balls symbolize the six districts city center , north quarter , east quarter , southeast quarter , south quarter and west quarter .
