Vogelheim ( called Platt Vüegelheem in Borbeck ) is a northern part of the city of Essen , and the youngest in its borough.

History and structural change

Vogelheim became known nationwide through a find in 1926, because the Vogelheimer blade was the oldest human tool in the region.

In the Middle Ages, Vogelheim was a rural area, which was mainly characterized by the water castles and mansions of Heck and Horl . This early farming settlement only developed into a miners' settlement after 1900. With the closure of the Emil-Emscher colliery in 1973, a structural change began. The industrial areas were converted into commercial areas with small and medium-sized industrial and craft businesses. Furthermore, the industrial settlements at the city harbor, the two old people's and nursing homes as well as the wholesale and retail trade offer jobs for many citizens today.

coat of arms

Vogelheim coat of arms

Blazon : "In silver (white) three bars of black birds, above and below two green bars."

The coat of arms was designed by Kurt Schweder and never had an official character. At the end of the 1980s, the heraldist created coats of arms for all of Essen's districts. They have meanwhile been well received by the Essen population.

Meaning: The coat of arms is a so-called " talking coat of arms "; the striding birds come from the coat of arms of the inheritance owners of Vogelheim. They later sold the estate to the von Knippenburg noble family, related to them . They also had the three birds in their coat of arms. The citizens of Vogelheim interpret the coat of arms as follows: the green of the bars for the hope of better respect for human dignity, the white of the shield for the peaceful acceptance of human diversity and the birds for freedom of the common good and the will of the citizen.

character

In the mining district, housing was created for workers in settlements near the mines at the beginning of the last century. The predominantly two- to three-storey, open construction still characterizes the entire district today. After the collieries were closed, the residential area continued to improve thanks to the creation of upscale residential developments and the expansion of the green area (greening in Essen north, forest development program in Essen north). Except for Hafenstrasse and Krablerstrasse, the entire residential area is traffic-calmed. There are four kindergartens. People of many nationalities live in the district. Around 17 percent of citizens are of foreign origin. In addition to the Catholic and Protestant congregations, the Croatian and a Spanish congregation are also located in the district.

The comprehensive school north was officially inaugurated on September 21, 1990. Almost 1000 students attended the Comprehensive School North in 2012, 50 percent of them have a migrant background. About 400 students graduated from high school.

In the street An der Walkmühle , a memorial stone commemorates the first manufacturing facility and thus the origins of Friedrich Krupp AG . In 1812 the first Reckhammer was built here by the company's founder Friedrich Krupp .

The mining settlement Wildstrasse was built in 1903 to provide living space to the new miners from the Emil 1/2 colliery, later the Emil-Emscher colliery .

In 1952 the church of St. Thomas More of the Catholic parish was built from rubble stones. It was profaned on September 30, 2018 and demolished at the end of 2019.

There is a memorial stone to Pastor Albert Schmidt on the street named after him. On September 23, 1969, he was awarded the honor plaque of the city of Essen in recognition of his special services in Vogelheim.

In order to determine the pollution of the air, a measuring station of the State Environment Agency was set up in Hafenstrasse / Wildstrasse.

In the district there is the city harbor, a fire station , the water police, a letter distribution center of the Deutsche Post AG and the first self-service wholesale market of Metro GmbH, which opened on November 8, 1963 .
