Huttrop is a district of the city of Essen south-east of the city center . He has mostly residential buildings. To the northwest, in the direction of the city center, the district merges with no visible border into the southeast district . The western part of Huttrop is formed by the Moltkeviertel , which is interesting in terms of urban planning and architecture and which is also partly located in the southeast quarter.

history

From the three individual small farmers Brünglinghausen, Hovescheidt and Huttrop, the latter mentioned for the first time in 1319, the large farmers Huttrop emerged in the 17th century. There were also other courtyards, although there are archaeological traces of the Volmerhof. The Essen-Steeler Landstrasse, which is seen as part of the Hellweg , ran through the large farmers . It ran from the Steeler Tor of the Essen city wall to the city of Steele . In the years 1788 to 1794 it was expanded and called Steeler Chaussee (since 1908: Steeler Straße). Tombs of descendants of the old Huttrop families are located in the old Huttrop cemetery and are now a listed building.

On September 1, 1808, the municipality of Altenessen was formed in the Grand Duchy of Berg, which was established by Napoleon , which included Huttrop, Frillendorf , Katernberg , Kray , Leithe , Rotthausen , Rüttenscheid , Schonnebeck and Stoppenberg . In 1815, after the defeat of Napoleon, this municipality came to Prussia after reorganization by the Congress of Vienna and became the mayor's office in Altenessen. On January 1, 1874, Huttrop and all parts except Karnap were spun off from the Altenessen mayor and came to the new mayor of Stoppenberg. On April 1, 1908, Huttrop was finally incorporated into the city of Essen.

coat of arms

Coat of arms of Huttrop

Blazon : "In gold (yellow) a blue hat with a red crossed cord accompanied by five blue upright drops in a ratio of 2: 2: 1."

The coat of arms was designed by Kurt Schweder and never had an official character. At the end of the 1980s, the heraldist created coats of arms for all of Essen's districts. They have meanwhile been well received by the Essen population.

It is a classic " talking coat of arms ", it represents a hat accompanied by drops. The part of the name "trop" stands for village. However, the syllable hat has been given a wide variety of interpretations by researchers and remains a mystery (height, hill, hut, etc.). However, this is not a problem for the design of the coat of arms, because in heraldry the scientific importance is secondary. What is important is the visual image conveyed by the sound of the name.

The park cemetery with the largest contiguous cemetery area in Essen is also located here . To the south of Steeler Straße there is still the historic Huttrop Cemetery , which has several listed tombs, but is no longer used for burials today. The district sports facility with the Hubertusburg sports hall is located on Dinnendahlstrasse. The former corporate headquarters of E.ON Ruhrgas, which was built in 1973, is also located in Huttrop . On October 18, 2010 E.ON Ruhrgas moved into a new building in Rüttenscheid . The old building was acquired by the Essener Fakt AG at the beginning of October 2011 and was later opened as a so-called Ruhr tower with a hotel, offices and conference center.
