School building and history

The school building was planned by the architect Edmund Körner during the imperial era from 1908 to 1911 . The building gains importance through its references to the founding phase of polytechnic institutions in the Wilhelmine Empire . The construction of the building took place under the influence of the ècole polytechnique from Paris from 1795. There are elements of Art Nouveau and Historicism. Other special features of the building are characterized by its monumental character and the clock tower with a domed roof . In addition to the main building, there is also a director's villa typical of the time.

The school was deliberately equipped with a large clock tower, as the building was built at the time of construction in one of the highest geographical areas in what was then the city of Essen.

After completion, the Royal Building Trade School, founded in 1908, moved into the building. During the Second World War , the building was damaged and partly rebuilt in a modified form.

In 1969, today's Robert Schmidt Vocational College was founded under the name Commercial Teaching Institutes North in the Altenessen district of Essen. There was already an application for a new building in the 1970s, which was not realized. In 1982 the Robert Schmidt Vocational College was moved to the current building. On February 14, 1985 it was entered in the list of monuments of the city of Essen.

In August 2000, the school was Commercial School III in Robert Schmidt vocational college , after city planner and director of the Association of Settlement Association Ruhrkohlenbezirk , Robert Schmidt , renamed.

In 2015, the Moltkeviertel citizens' association planned to renovate the tower. For this purpose, the association solicited 15,000 euros in donations from the population. The head of the monument authority spoke positively about the project. A change to the clockwork was planned. The four dials were originally operated by a single movement, which led to complications in operation in windy conditions. These were replaced by four separate clockworks. In August 2016, the city removed the clock's dials for cost reasons and structural defects. However, the association had already collected 9,000 euros, which was sufficient for the renovation of the clockwork. The city refused to pay for the replacement of the dials. Thus, the association collected further donations of 2500 euros until November 2016, which resulted in a total of 17,500 euros. The association continued to criticize that the city did not want to leave the award of the contract to the association. The renovation was completed at the end of 2016.

Partner school

In 2015, a partnership was entered into with the Chinese logistics school Qingdao Commerce School in Qingdao . For this purpose, a Chinese delegation, consisting of the Chinese provincial government and representatives of the Qingdao Commerce School, visited the Robert Schmidt Vocational College. There are also student exchanges.

The school also has relationships with the Shanghai I&C Foreign Languages School and in 2016 hosted a project week for teachers and students at the Shanghai I&C Foreign Languages School. Knowledge of the German economic system was imparted there.
