Steve Longworth (born July 27, 1948 ) is an English snooker player who was a professional player for eleven seasons from the 1984/85 season .

Career

Beginnings

Longworth reached the quarter-finals of the Northern English Snooker Championship in 1974 at the age of 25 , where he lost to the later English champion Ray Edmonds . After an opening defeat in 1976, he then moved to the semi-finals in 1977, in which he had to admit defeat to Dave Martin . A year later he took part for the first time in the Pontins Spring Open - a tournament in which both amateurs and professionals played - in which, after victories over Mario Berni and Brian Cakebread, he was defeated by the multiple professional world champion Ray Reardon .

In 1984 he had his breakthrough when he defeated Jack McLaughlin 8: 7 in the finals of the Northern English snooker championship and thus qualified for the final of the English championship. Longworth also won this game, defeating Welsh Wayne Jones 13: 8 and becoming a professional player for the 1984/85 season.

First professional years

Longworth started his first professional season with two defeats very cautiously until he reached the round of 64 at the UK Championship and the subsequent Classic with wins over, for example, Peter Francisco , Neal Foulds and David Taylor, the round of 16, in which he defeated Cliff Thorburn had to give. Shortly afterwards he succeeded in the English professional championship with the help of a victory over Jimmy White and others to move into the semifinals, which he lost to Tony Knowles . This started for McLaughlin with a second round out of the Matchroom Trophy , before he made it to the round of 16 at the Grand Prix and lost to Kirk Stevens there . After losing to Tony Meo in the round of 64 at the UK Championship , he lost his opening game at the Classic before losing to Dean Reynolds in the round of 32 of the English Professional Championship . He then reached the round of 32 at the British Open with wins over Pat Houlihan and Eugene Hughes , in which he had to admit defeat to Peter Francisco. McLaughlin ended the season by moving into the very last qualifying round for the World Snooker Championship , in which he was defeated by John Virgo with 8:10. In the world rankings, McLaughlin improved six places to 31st place.

Establishment in the top 30

After Longworth had to accept two opening defeats at the beginning of the 1986/87 season , he reached the round of 32 in the UK Championship with wins over Brian Rowswell and Doug Mountjoy , in which he was defeated by John Parrott . After a second round defeat at the Classic and two opening defeats, Longworth moved for the first time in his career by a 10-2 win over Tommy Murphy in the Crucible Theater - in the main round of the World Snooker Championship . There he defeated Kirk Stevens before losing to Stephen Hendry in the quarterfinals . Through this success Longworth secured the 31st world rankings again.

The next season began with a defeat in the round of 32 of the International Open before reaching the round of 32 in the UK Championship and the Classic after an opening defeat at the Grand Prix . Then he lost again in the round of 16 of the English professional championship against Tony Meo , before losing his opening game again at the British Open . At the end of the season Longworth qualified with a 10-2 win over Graham Cripsey for the main round of the Snooker World Championship , in which he was immediately defeated 1:10 against Terry Griffiths . On the world rankings Longworth improved by one place, so that he was listed in 30th place in the following season. For him this remained the best world ranking of his career.

After a subdued start to the 1988/89 season , Longworth moved into the last sixteen at the Canadian Masters , before taking another opening defeat at the UK Championship against Danny Fowler . In the new year he reached the quarter-finals of the third WPBSA non-ranking event , before he reached the round of 32 of the European Open after another opening defeat and lost 5-0 to Stephen Hendry . He then moved into the quarter-finals of the English professional championship and shortly thereafter in the round of the last 32 of the British Open , before losing 0:10 to the Irish Paddy Browne in qualifying for the World Snooker Championship . As a result of these results, Longworth lost four places in the world rankings and ended up in 34th place.

Crash to the 123rd place in the world rankings

After two defeats at the start of the 1989/90 season , Longworth reached the first event of the WPBSA non-ranking in 1989 with a victory over Matt Gibson, the round of 32, in which John Rea had to admit defeat. After losing another opening game, McLaughlin reached the round of 64 at the Grand Prix and, after two further opener defeats, the UK Championship . Longworth started the new year with an opening defeat before he reached the round of the last 64 of the British Open with a win over Brian Morgan and lost to Tony Drago there . But at the end of the season Longworth had to take two more defeats, which caused him to fall from the top 50 to 57th in the world rankings.

Also at the beginning of the next season Longworth suffered two opening defeats before he reached the round of 64 at the Asian Open with a victory over Malcolm Bradley and was eliminated by Willie Thorne . However, another series of defeats followed, which he ended with a 5-4 win over Stephen Murphy at the Classic , but then lost to Dene O'Kane . Shortly thereafter, Longworth moved with victories over Martin Clark , Jim Rempe , Stefan Mazrocis and Jonathan Birch in the quarterfinals of the men's individual competition of the World Masters , in which he was eliminated by Jimmy White . Longworth, however, then continued his opening defeat streak and lost all three outstanding games of the season. In the world rankings he therefore slipped to 98th place.

After another opening defeat in the first tournament of the 1991/92 season , Longworth reached the round of 96 at the Grand Prix and the UK Championship and the second round of the Benson & Hedges Championship for him . After three opening defeats in the new year, he moved into the round of the last 128 of the British Open , but two more opening defeats followed. In qualifying for the snooker world championship , he defeated Robert Dickson before he was eliminated with a 6-10 defeat by Stephen Murphy. On the ranking list he continued to fall, in the next season he was listed in 123rd place.

Last professional years

In the first three tournaments of the 1992/93 season Longworth did not have to accept any opening defeats; He reached the round of 128 at both the Dubai Classic and the Benson & Hedges Championship , and the round of 96 at the Grand Prix. After his first opening defeat of the season, Longworth made two more rounds of the 128 before hitting as many Had to take defeats at the beginning.
